Red Alert: A Path Beyond brings the exciting storyline and epic clashes from the classic Westwood Studios game, Command & Conquer: Red Alert to realm of first person shooters, with a twist. We've remained loyal to the style and feel of the 1996 classic, while integrating content from its expansions Counterstrike and The Aftermath with a bit of updated history to add to the mix. Built off the W3d engine Westwood Studios built for classics such as Earth & Beyond and Command & Conquer: Renegade finished up in 2001, we help bring the fight to you as you play out your role as any one of a number of infantry classes participating in team-based combat that often involves land, sea, and air combined-arms clashes that just don't happen in any other game. Oh, and did we mention it is FREE?

Great game. These people are porfessionals who don't get paid. They are true game-makers, keep up the good work!

The game has a few problems with it. The engine is outdated. There aren't alot of players playing in the servers. The buildings are too big and sometimes take a while to get out. If you die, and spawn in the refinery, you sometimes have to wait for the elevator to come up to get out.

Complaints First: Soviets don't get attack dogs! WTF????

Breakdown of Rating:
I expected a RA experience foremost (2/4), with FPS concepts (1/2), creativity in game mechanics (2/3) and playability (1/1) = 6/10

I really disliked how somethings didn't behave like RA would dictate. Tesla tanks/troopers shooting air? "Captains" with machine guns that out range base defenses? Many games became waiting periods because of silly infantry rushes with really value to them. Since when did RA have captains/shotguns/snipers? Volkov is only in ONE map, in the Aftermath expansion- yet somehow he's one of the most common features in A Path Beyond?? Why. Also, in RA, Tesla coil range is 8, in APB, its a mere 5 (turret range). Why?

Attack dogs would really add value. Seriously, Bluehell- do it. Pls. 12/10 with attack dogs. ALSO, make a map with Ants- they're more featured in RA than OP Volkov.

For a game that has been in development for this long it's hard to believe it's only in the gamma phase. I've played probably <30 rounds and must confess there is some nostalgia to be experienced if you played RA Dos/95.

The Learning Curve is exponential. Some aspects are similar to other games and if you watch the youtube videos you can alleviate some of that curve. However, special secondaries and counters are not explained well and the noob raep is unforgiving. I'm more of a RTS so getting ganked wasn't unexpected.

Having said that, I really like the team chat commands of (ctrl + _ etc) and they had add alot to the fun of the game.

Compliments:
Obviously like a FPS much of it is to be expected so many of the weapon types are predictable. Having said that *the operation of helicopters, ore trucks, mines, spies and repair functions add something to the game you won't find in Call of Duty.*

It's free and standalone, you should try it if you're into FPSs (but don't join if server is below 10 plays -trust me- it can really drag). I played as "villie" on the APB MP-Gaming -server

A very promising shooter, ambitious and loads of content, but the engine is a bit outdated.
