Halo: Out With a Whimper is a 2D side-scrolling fan game currently under development.


The newest OWaW demo is up ladies and gentlemen. Try it out, tell us what you think. More to come in the morning, but for now, we must sleep.

I'd like to thank the team, especiall KP and Zero, they really pulled through and there's no way we coulda' gotten it done without their effort. And of course the beta testers, making sure the game won't make your PC set on fire or anything.

Also, a ton of thanks goes out to P3PP3RM4N from HBO for the main menu track. Pretty rad, right?

let me start with saying that it does look great, it has that Halo feeling all over it, even when it is a side scrolling instead of a ed game.
that said you asked us to give our comments on it and i am always willing to do so. i know it's the beta version so probably are some issues that i thought of caused by it being a demo/beta.

-first of all didn't i like the small screen, i this because its beta, or is that how it is. i hope it will have a full screen mode because now it's sometimes hard to see what is what.
-i missed at the start some introduction about how to play the game, which button does what, but again, this probably will be in the final version.
-the RPG element in the beginning, that you can choose between helm and body colors, that doesn't do much to me, but i know many people do like that. so this is just a personal remark.
-my normal pc is in the repair shop so i had to play it on my old 2.4 Ghz laptop with very little memory, what made that even on low quality i had fps problems. but, most computers can handle the game easily i assume.
-i thought the 3 levels where very mall, all i could do was walk/fight from left to right, there where no doors to open or other issues, but again, this can be because its a demo. still, now i kept fighting left and right and i didn't know what would complete the level.
-one issue that really bothered me was the slow reloading of the weapons, specially the machine gun i had choose took 'ages' to reload, what really was frustrating. personally i would like to see the weapons reload easily, also had i much trouble with finding ammo again, several times i found myself without any ammo.

all in all, great game, and hopefully will the final game have 'fixed'the issues that i found.

- We'll have a fullscreen option in the final version. We excluded it for now in the interest of time.
- Press F1 and the controls come up. There's a little reminder at the start of the game.
- Halo's always been about customization, so it'd be wrong not to include that, lol.
- Yeah, that's the first lag problem that's come to our attention, so I imagine it's because of an older computer.
- The original Site 17 map was huge, but most of the terrain was unused and fighting was contained to a small section of the map. It was a giant waste of space and instead of fighting constant waves of enemies you'd fight a few, wait and then fight a few more because it took the AI so long to traverse the map. Smaller maps run a lot smoother.
- Reloading times were a bit exaggerated, I agree. As for ammo, the blue waypoints in your HUD will point out an ammo source. I'll make it point out the smaller ammo packages for sniper and rockets as well.

Well to start my review,
You guys did a very good job.
Now to the game:
-The armor changing and coloring feature really made the game better.
-I hate the fact that the way he reloads is putting it aside then lifting it up, if you can, at least try making reloads.
-You could have made the ammo respawn at X time other then every round.
i was stuck at most of the 3rd round running around using melee other then using my guns, only at the end i manged to pick a good weapon outta the aliens, OFC the round ended so i picked my other weapon and got ammo. you should at least make it 2.5 minutes ammo respawn.
-The Forge game type is very nice, a suggestion to the scenery, add a crashed marine ship.
-The amount off ammo your character starts off with is really low. in halo you could hold up to 600 rounds to the rifle, you can hold only up to 80 here. i would expect at least 200 rounds.
-I detected a sound bug, when you have 2 sounds working at the same time, the sound gets stuck, while the game keeps going. you can solve this by turning off your sound and then turning it on.

I really hope you could make this game better, but for now, you've done well for a beta.

l loved the game will there ever be multiplayer like splitscreen, controller support so its easier for splitscreen cause its annoying having four hands on a keyboard or more at once and will there be screen revolution cause its small on my screen but l don't know if it is for other people or if you can make it bigger

-May take some time to discover all the finer points of customizations and game-play as there's no real instructions aside from F1. A bit confusing and the " learn as you go " can be frustrating. Needs an overview doc..
-Personally I have to be able to bind my own control keys. I don't like the old standards, W-A-S-D, etc. Makes a world of difference to me. I hope that's coming later on.
-It's a great looking game. Very colorful with some great audio work. The overall game play is quite smooth and consistent.
-The weapons changing and reloading needs some fine tuning for certain. When the game-play gets nice and hectic, I'm getting my *** handed to me during a reload and/or switch.
-A terrific job has been done in making this game unmistakably " Halo ", with all due respect to the franchise.
-Not a resource hog-It never lagged a bit ( I ran it on an older, low-end PC I use for running these ).
- It's all Halo and a retro styled side-scroller ! I really like it and I'm looking forward to more.

It would be cooler if you included the Halo announcers voice to say, "double kill, triple kill, overkill, etc." Also, please let us use the sword because that would be fun to lunge around and kill enemies.

Overall, I was addicted to the game from the start so great work.

- first is what seems to be on everyone's mind is *fullscreen Mode*
- someway to actually spot the weapon dropped with out randomly running over it to see if it pops up but by the time i have it has vanished so i would like *somekind of glow around the weapon so u can see it on the ground*
- game has to have *multiplayer*. it is missing on that but that would make it huge
-maybe add that classic over voice saying monster kill, double kill, running riot, its just too quite.

- mabye some kind of way to shoot down the dropships.

for a starter its great but this game is screaming for multi with 4 friends this would be awesomeer and how about a bigger screen...plz and some unsc vehicles more fire fights environments some names for the achievments and here is a kinda cool idea how about space fights from halo reach it would be great to have them and last but not least leader boards

other than that its great stuff awesome work and keep it up for the sake of all halo-computer using fans :D

Ok, here's my review.

Positive: It has a very halo feel, it has a very well made forge mode, the weapon choice rocks, and firefight is very well made.

Negetive: to many brute types, no elites as enemies?, I want to drive the vehichels, tiny areas, not much varitey, controls are very confusing and f1 dosen't do anything.

Those are very smal complaints, which i hope will be resolved in the full version.

In the Forge, I accidently placed a object inside of my dude, and I had to quit. It would be nice if you could make it not place the object or something. And it would be cool if you could make some type of object that would make enemys head toward or attack move to.(in the forge)
