Current Task: Improving Battle AI

"It's been some time since I last saw my brother Harald. The last time I saw him was when he left the village in search of a friend of his. It was something about trouble in Novostrana. His friend had decided to become a Mercenary in the service of the King there. He wanted to see him again before things got too bad and it would be too dangerous to travel in the area. Tomorrow I leave to discover his fate. While I'm quietly optimistic about finding him, I know there is always a possibility that something has happened to him. My brother was going to be meeting his friend at the Inn in a place called Willenke Village. I guess I should start there..."

Novostrana is a Fantasy RPG currently in development by Apok Studios where you must travel to the Kingdom of Novostrana to find your brother. In Novostrana you will meet many unique characters (all of which are hand-scripted), travel through the vast wilderness, forests and marshes and fight many enemies. You will also be able to trade, perform alchemy, work with companions and fight against either the King or the Rebels. Novostrana uses a heavily modified RPG Maker XP engine.

  • Large Game World - Over 100 unique areas to visit!
  • Free Roam - You have the freedom to go anywhere in the game!
  • Two Story Campaigns - Will you fight for the King or for the Rebels?
  • Side Quests - Many risks and rewards await you!
  • Dynamic World - Day and Night, Weather, NPC Schedules, Random Encounters, etc.
  • And many More!
  • Freeware - Novostrana is going to be free to download and play.

An Alpha version has been to released to the public. This is an incomplete version of the game, but gives an idea of what you can expect from the full release of Novostrana.

The Alpha Demo can be found in our 'Downloads' section. It weighs in at just under 80MB, which is slightly larger than anticipated, but we think it's worth it!

Alpha Release Alpha Release

This version of the game contains the following:

  • Over 60 areas to explore.
  • 4 full quests to complete.
  • 15 unique NPCs to talk to.
  • ... and plenty of bugs!

This should work on all Windows PCs and Laptop, but good performance is not guaranteed as it has only been tested on one High-End machine. Unfortunately the game is not yet moddable, but the full version will be. A ReadMe file has been included to help you learn how to play the game.

Hmm... that's interesting...
The character is actually from the stock graphics of RPG Maker XP but it looks like it may have been converted to work with RPG Toolkit.
Thanks for the heads-up anyway. :)

Yup, it's an RPG Maker XP game. The only programs used are RPG Maker XP, Adobe Fireworks and Photoshop.

Well I was tempted to write a review but I felt I should note my thoughts here instead.

I collected what little armor I could find only to find that I cannot find any enemies to fight/kill.

So after getting to level 4 and having a stockpile of health, I found my character constantly hungry and me completely broke to buy food!

Another complaint I had was lack of interactivity. I'd like to examine that weird headstone or the fish in the marketplace. Instead I'm wandering around aimlessly and trying to talk to guards who seemingly ignore me.
I'd also like the ability to barge into random houses and talk to it's inhabitants.
Instead, very few houses are able to be entered and when you do enter the ones you can, your usually trapped in a deathtrap of 'not being able to exit'.

This really bothers me when I find an interesting house. I attempt to barge in, and when that doesn't work, I explore the area, only to find its a bunch of locked houses and citizens that ignore me.

This also gets irritating since there are literally miles and miles of forest landscape to explore. But when you can't really explore anything, it really becomes a chore.

Not to mention when its night time, its 'really' dark.

The storyline didn't really catch me but I felt compelled to find this brother anyways.

On the bright side, I can see this becoming very potentially good.

So in a rundown:

-Night time less dark
-More interact-ability
-Less various forest paths
-More fighting?

Just ideas. I might have missed somethings though.

This is still an Alpha version and it explains in the ReadMe that there are no enemies to kill (except for the one you fight during one of the four quests.
When it's done there will be a lot more interactivity. Most small plants on the 'wilderness' maps can already be picked up, but in the full version you will also be able to steal from stalls in the market place and from shops. Only a few of the NPCs in the game have been scripted so-far. Everyone will eventually talk to you

I take your point about night time. The idea was to make it really feel like night in a pre-industrial world, but seeing as the technology I'm working with probably wouldn't allow a torch or anything, I may make the nights a little less dark.

A mod requires the original game to run. This is a stand-alone game because it does not require the player to have a copy of RPG Maker XP.
In my humble opinion RPG Maker XP shouldn't even be in the games list; it should be in the Engines list (much like FPSC is listed under engines not games).

I can request to have that changed then, seeing that my VX "Mod" is standalone.
