Nebula Frontiers is a mash-up space trader / combat MMO, inspired by gameplay from Frontier: Elite 2, Thrust and World of Warcraft.
The main goal of the game will be to survive in a hostile area of space, working with and competing against other players for limited resources. Players can trade materials, manufacture complex items, build space stations and communities, form alliances or engage in warfare.
The concepts of an (effectively) infinite procedurally generated universe, trading and missions is straight out of Frontier: Elite 2. Although, on the surface, it will look like a top-down shooter, the combat system will be more like that of WoW, where skill and strategy are more important than reflexes. Attacks and abilities need to be used wisely and players will eventually be able customize their ships for their style of play.
The ships will control much like those in Thrust (and its many clones) with rotation, thrust and inertia.
This video demonstrates the working features of the game engine:
I forgot to show off collisions (you'll have to trust me; crashing into that big asteroid reduces you to scrap metal!). The game update loop runs at 50 ticks per second and the screen redraws at 60 FPS (VSync). The video may look a little choppy as I used my laptop to record and it sucked performance.
I'm still working on a couple of bugs with sector boundaries and ship-ship collision. I am changing a couple of features before a demo release:
All that will be done before I even look at adding sound...
looks cool =) seems similar to starfighter disputed galaxy
I googled Starfighter DG and read through some info on it and watched some videos. They look similar in many respects. Obviously both games are inspired by the same original titles.
