Not everything needs a purpose, with writable books it makes for a good way to make it obvious for people to find the next book in an adventure map.

Looks cool but...how exactly does this help? Maybe in like parkour maps for smart-move or adventurecraft maps but other than that...

I can think of many uses. It will be really usefull on multiplayer servers. Admins will be able to write server rules, console commands or help notes into few books and than place them in spawning area. Admins will no longer have to cover entire walls with signs.

I would imagine it could be for the pyramids/beacons to choose what kind of effect to put out.

Could be something similar to enchanting.
Adventure map creators could give them a specific power so when players open the book, they are given a new ability. (Increased XP drops, improved strength etc)
