On April 30, 2010, after a year of awaiting their request to be fulfilled, MekTek finally received approval from Microsoft Games Studios to release Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries for free. Using their MTX peer-to-peer downloader and update client, MekTek provided for users to share the game and its updates directly with each other.
Due to the high volume and demand for the game, with over 100,000 people trying to download at once, the MekTek host servers crashed. Access was restored in May.
The game was further released with the MekPak 3.1 expansion, which provided additional mechs to pilot.
As of 2014, however, MekTek moved on to develop MechWarrior Online in response to blocked attempts and lawsuits over development of Mechwarrior 5.
