Darkout is a sandbox, with strategy and survival components. One of the clearest influences present in the game comes from titles like Minecraft or Terraria, sandbox platformers where the player can build up facilities and modify his environment at will. But in Darkout there are some interesting points that make it worth to look at, starting by the importance that light has in the game. I have been playing this game almost non stop for the last couple of days. There are some small issues the devs need to sort out but even with these problems the game is very addictive. I find myself eagerly completing the research tree, wondering what awesome stuff I will unlock at the next tier and my base looks more and more high-tech with each upgrade.
The game starts out tense, you've crash landed in an escape pod with only a few key gadgets, a gun (with 25 bullets) and your wits. This makes for a very tense start as you struggle to set up and craft your first weapons as you watch your ammo slowly deplete. Unfortunately, in the current build this tension is lost in the later stages of the game as you become quite powerful and monsters struggle to even damage you. That said, the games interesting graphics and atmosphere make it a joy to explore, collect, craft funky gadgets and deck out your home base even without the worry of dying.
Another notable thing about this game is the devs and the community. The community seems rather small at the minute, but if you post on the forums chances are you will be replied to by a developer or a knowledgeable community member promptly.
All in all, I would highly recommend this game to anyone who thinks the sound of a SciFi sandbox world.
