Darkout has been in development since July 2011 by a small group of people from very different countries (UK, Southafrica, France, The Nederlands...) behind the game there is Adrian Banninga, an industry veteran who has been working in the CG field since 2000.

The main features of the game are:

  • Sci-fi theme with elaborated graphics. The game atmosphere is clearly inspired in movies like Aliens, I am Legend or Pitch Black. Also the game aims to capture the beautiful landscapes seen in recent films like Avatar.
  • Great survival component. Your character will be constantly harassed by enemies coming from the darkness and will have no other choice than fighting for his life with the weapons he will find, everything to gain access to precious resources he can craft/loot/harvest.
  • Light vs. Dark combat system. You are the only survivor in a world ruled by darkness where light will be your best ally to make your road through hordes of hostile creatures. At the same time, the light will be the biggest attractor for the enemies who want to destroy you and convert your soul todark matter by all means. Other nice point to mention is that the player will encounter some awesome and fierce bosses waiting for him at different points of the game.
  • Exploration and strategic component. The game design is shaped in a way that the player will have to think twice about where to set his base, how to manage resources he find and and research the materials from his environment in order to upgrade his equipment. In this way you will evolve your character along the game acquiring unique habilities and features for your tracksuit and weapons.
  • The game will be released in Q3 2012, on next months we have planned to release a beta version and also to submit to Steam. Versions for iPad and XBLA are also on our schedule. The game updates will be free and inclusive for the initial game price, also the price of the game will be very competitive with Terraria and Minecraft.

Just wanted to add to my previous post.

The manner by which the devs have hidden the underlying the tile system in the game is incredibly smart.

There is genuine feeling of evolution, when comparing this to similar titles in the genre.
Adds greatly to the aesthetic, and in that regard feels ahead of its time.

It's certainly not a world of cubes.

Beautiful game.

If this has caught your eye, and are curious. I'd highly recommend the purchase.
Your curiousity is rewarded in spades.

My only issue is combat, really hope the devs can make this a bit more fluid.
With a solid combat system, possibly combat events, this could be coming awesomely close to brilliance.

Now for some review: First, expect more awesome updates because they originally asked for $500 donations and ended w. 5000 I created a full game review in my blog that will hopefully give you all enough information to help you guys decide weather the game is for you or not. I included some beginner's tip, breakdown on the game's features and content, I also put their future plans and upcoming contents and work in progress in there, as welll as the retailers you can get the game from and why I think…

I recently got this game on Desura. It looked very nice and seemed to have an good design. Unfortunatly it is hard to like when it has so many strange design choises. The first obstacle I stumbeled upon was the account. I started the program and it demanded an account. Which I could not create either in game or be linked to any web page to do it. Not until I read some posts in the forums I understood I had to link my desura account so a mail could be sent out. Holy cow what a un-friendly way of…
