Darkout is a sandbox, with strategy and survival components. One of the clearest influences present in the game comes from titles like Minecraft or Terraria, sandbox platformers where the player can build up facilities and modify his environment at will. But in Darkout there are some interesting points that make it worth to look at, starting by the importance that light has in the game. I recently got this game on Desura. It looked very nice and seemed to have an good design. Unfortunatly it is hard to like when it has so many strange design choises.
The first obstacle I stumbeled upon was the account. I started the program and it demanded an account. Which I could not create either in game or be linked to any web page to do it. Not until I read some posts in the forums I understood I had to link my desura account so a mail could be sent out. Holy cow what a un-friendly way of doing things. I do not know if this is specific to the beta version. But it needs to be corrected sooner rather than later.
Ok. Next up came the fact that when I had the account I could not for the life of me find the key combo in order to type "@" inside the game. Regular key combos did not work. I use a password manager so I tabbed out to copy and paste. Well that broke the game. After a (unwanted) restart I finally logged in. All in all this was my third run.
Ok so the game is running. Then we have the settings. Very few types of resolutions. Since I often record games on my youtube channel I need a window setting. The game have this. But when changing to window instead of full screen it lowers the resolutions even more. It's like turing back the clock ten years or so. Could not even get 720p. Ok, so I settle on 800x600. Way to small but at least I can continue on.
Create a character. No issues here. Except there are no custom looks what so ever. Not a big thing and maybe it comes later. Can I play now? No! Need to create the world first.
I proceed to create the world and at last I can play.
But then I discover how poorly the graphics scale to the resolution I chose. So two thirds of the allready small window is ground. Half of what's left is part of the UI. Something I can not even see is shooting at me from the first second. I then press "esc" to se if I can change anything in settings. But this
is not possible. Well except for the volume level and such.
