A small sandbox city, vehicles to take and missions to do driving and/or on foot. This is a project made by one person mainly as a learning experience, with the main goal of at least creating a 'proof of concept' demo. Programmed using DirectX 9.0c for the graphics, Bullet Physics as the physics engine and OpenAL for the sound.

The 'Proof of Concept' demo is now available. Keep in mind this is a very early demo, it still isn't much fun to play and there are tons of things that need improvements (the city is small, there are very few things to do, the AI is too basic, there are some bugs...). It's just meant as a milestone for the project, a 'proof of concept', a way for me of having something to show and test to see how things are developing and where I can take it from here, but I've decided to release it in case someone wants to check it out or help me test it.

'City' Project: 'Proof of Concept' Demo

I recommend taking a look at the README file before playing, it contains information about the requirements, controls, known bugs (there's one that makes the camera go blank that seems to happen more often than I thought), things I want to add in future versions, the credits...
Note: from the feedback I've received so far, the demo doesn't seem to work too well with integrated/intel graphics cards (low or too variable framerates and strange behavior of the traffic), something I expected but didn't add to the README file.


Now, I'm going to take some time apart from this project, the last couple of weeks have been quite intense, trying to include everything I wanted in the demo and make it work, and I want to learn new things for a little while, like Unity for example, and/or make an FPS...

your project has a Future if you make it : able of using google maps and after that , google street . may be the best "route" is to include bing maps . they both have 3d buildings , may be some can be visited / seen during the game ;']

I hear Minecraft sounds... xD It would be cool if you could make your own sounds. Ask some help, if you don't know. But it's still a cool project. I'm going to track this.

As you can see in the credits in the README file I include, I use some creative commons sounds from freesound.org, something Minecraft does too. For example, you probably recognized this one Freesound.org which, in this case, anyone can use as long as you credit the author. freesound.org is a very helpful resource I used to find sounds or pieces of sounds I modified to my needs, nothing 'strange' about the origin of the sounds, if that's what you were thinking :D

This is very impressive for one person to have creative, it reminds me somewhat of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. I hope you enjoy the experience and learn a lot from it ;).

This looks very nice, just a tiny bit of advice though, Unity does in fact have a ragdoll system and it wouldnt hurt adding that for reality sake, and also make it so that the heavy breathing sound doesnt start untill a certain amount of time after running other than that i love it

I'm not using Unity for this project, the graphics engine is custom made (programmed using DirectX 9.0c) and I use Bullet for the physics' code (it has a ragdoll example, so I think that with time and some trial and error to polish it I could implement ragdolls into the game). Yes, I think the same about the breathing sound, I included it at the last moment and only had time to make it this way. Thanks for the suggestions.

Well, I bought some of the models (the pedestrians and vehicles mostly) and found some for free, and modified them to my needs, so I didn't have to make everything myself; found some creative commons music and sounds... (you can see the credits in the readme file) the rest is all me, yes. The idea was learning as much as possible.

Thanks! Why shouldn't it, I'm just doing something similar to the games I enjoy, but much simpler, to help me keep motivated; my goal with this project is learning, not creating something original, and therefore keeping motivated is quite important for me.
