Well, at first, Ian and I (Dave) sat down and laughed and brainstormed and got bored and then brainstormed again and laughed. We wrote down lines for each character to say and then trimmed, then trimmed, then trimmed and so on.

When Evan came to visit us at the end of January, we realized he was much better at this than us. We went over the whole script and started again, and got a much better and cohesive arrangement of the small vignette.

We were mainly used to writing things so that they would be read –like our quests and descriptive text in the game. Our stuff didn’t really work very well as lines with animation.

Then we had to do a mock up of saying the lines with the right timing. We did this with a handycam in a soundroom –it was exciting, funny, slightly embarrassing and I’d totally do it again! In the end, Evan put those shots together with sketches of the shots he imagined to get an idea of how it would all fit together. And this is what it looked like.

After listening again, the placeholder music is really funny and cheesy! Ha ha!

I really hope we can get some better voice actors, but it doesn’t seem likely, so we may have to do the recording again for each line. Thanks to Tracy, JJ and Joanna who tried out the goblin voice! Good times.

We’ve moved beyond this script and have recorded a few times since then to give Evan and his team some more weird faces to work with the animations. We look forward to seeing how it all turns out.

We should be showing it off at our booth at GDC so if you’re attending please come on by and check out the City of Steam CG animated shorts. We’ll also have a few stations set up with the sneak peek version of City of Steam, so lots to check out!

We’ll be at Booth # 1832.
