The last Design Developer Journal of 2011, we got some stats for you guys to take a look!

First of all, Merry Christmas and a happy new year! I am getting ready to have an awesome new year and experience Nostradamus’ end of the world over a few casual drinks.

Oh, and thanks to Vanessa, Rowanne, Vicky and Jessica for organizing the Christmas Party! Fun!

Number Crunching

Back to business! This week has been a grueling crawl through the weapon stats and armor stats. I am pretty confident that the hundreds of weapons are now all nicely balanced… at least on paper.

And damn, it was hard work! This mother of all spreadsheets spans two 1920×1080 resolution screens and we totally colored those columns, bolded important numbers, italicized half-way calculation variables, and put lines and stuff in there for good measure. Oh, we also put some numbers in the boxes every now and then, a weapon name or two, etc, etc, ha ha!

Let me go over the basic pros and cons of combat styles. Essentially, there are three general ways in which weapons can be wielded.

Oh, and just to explain –special ability damage means the extra weapon damage factored in from your weapon when you ‘fireball’ or ‘cleave’ or ‘blast’ an enemy.

But that said, there is so much you can do to the weapons when you upgrade them. You might not want your two-handed warblade to be slow, and customize it for faster striking, radically changing its default strengths and weaknesses.

Suits of armor? Yeah we went there too. Here’s the lowdown on the most basic armor sets –they get a lot better than this but you can see this basic comparison to get an idea of how armors work.

Looking over these values right now I can definitely say they will change in the future, but the relationship between them will be more or less the same. The more protection you have, the slower you will move and attack. So in other words, damage mitigation from armor will balance against the damage output of your attacks.

And in that, there is plenty of room for tweaking and play-testing. But you get the idea. Till next week!

why there is no protection on weapon, I mean sword and shield would give more protection than others, and dual sword would give medium defense and 2h sword would leave without defense bonus or very small..

At the moment these choices revolve around strategy. Perhaps they could also change the defense of a character as well. Good point, we'll bring it up with the Design guys. Thanks!
