Repost from City of Steam Dev Journals.

Good day, everybody. It’s the awesome art department again. Today we have some cool, not that development-related, updates on what has been accomplished in our department recently. Compliments are “shamelessly” expected at this point so have your hands prepared to applaud, please.

First of all, the new Cartoon Avatars/Signature Images.

The past week was rife with discussions, arguments and bouts of laughter. We were tasked to draw some pictures of the dev journal writers and forum moderators in diverse moods – happy, exuberant, angy, sleepy, gloomy, sneering, shocked, appalled… you name it. The idea was to use these drawings as avatars on the forum,  as signature images in dev journals as well as some other places you’ll see coming soon.

(Embarrassed David)

(Frustrated Andrew)

(Appalled Charben)

At first we thought it would be just some ordinary cartoon images but we soon found the best idea would be to make City of Steam versions of these guys. We actually had a fight over the races that we wanted to be – someone is still depressed because we make him a Draug while he would rather be human, or in the least, a Riven. But we all thought he would make a better Draug than any other race so we’ll just leave him to sulk…  I’m sure it’ll grow on him. XD.

(Sinister Draug Wayne)

(Distracted Riven Johnny)

Had we made a poll among our colleagues, Goblins would have been one of the most popular races – at least two had made their official request to be drawn as a Goblin, while none of them had requested or consented to be drawn as the other greenskin brothers, Hobbes and Orcs. We found it so amusing that although Orc had been one of our colleagues’ favorite race, he firmly put his foot down and refused to be made one. Apart from Goblin, Riven seems also very popular (just like your votes on the forum). They’re elegant, graceful, and well-bred, and most importantly rich! Ah okay… we’re nerds and we know it.

(Befuddled Goblin Sam)

(Frowning Goblin Shirley)

Besides the cartoon avatars, we’ve also been working on the armor concepts, redoing many textures in many of the scenes as well as a whole slew of things to do with the weapon upgrading system. We’ll let you know as soon as we’ve nailed them down.

So what do you think of the new look of the team? Post your comments here.

Thanks guys, really appreciate that. Our artists really did a good job and you guys can see we are using these avatars on the forum and at the bottom of the dev journals. We are trying to get everything promised done before Alpha, look forward to July. :)
