Ardent Seas blends modern naval combat with classical RTS gameplay, featuring Aliens, space lasers, and unholy amounts of missiles
Not related to the devblog, but this little thing was added today. Now tank turrets, and other parts too, can get blasted off when a unit dies.

The Panther has both a turret and a hull magazine, much like the Leopard 2, thus its turret can indeed get blown off.
Nit: Isn't most turret popping more of a factor of how the ammo storage is configured, rather than where it's located?
(Well, and whether your mechanical loading system is terminally opposed to the separation of storage and fighting compartments, I guess.)
Not that I mind the occasional turret dance, regardless of non-modeled details. :P
The Panther is meant to be a representation of the Leopard 2a6, with some of the very same weaknesses, such as the "open" hull magazine. Blowout-hatches are very hard to put into the hull of a tank without compromising the armor integrity.
The thinking here is that by up-armoring the area around the magazine, you can basically rule out any hit setting off the ammorack, that wouldn't kill the crew anyway.

The Leopard 2 is unique among western tanks regarding that weakness. The M1A2 stores all ammo in the turret bossel, while the Challenger 2 stores all of its propellant charges in the turret bossel, and some inert ammo in the hull.
Ooooooh, shiny!
Guess it would be a bit of a pain to make a hull blowout vent that doesn't risk cooking the underside of your turret bustle.
Makes sense as a sacrifice, though. From what I've gathered, incoming fire tends to mostly come in above a certain height...mostly.
Quick bit of digging: The Leclerc seems to share this approach.
Yep, it appears that the Leclerc also has a frontal ammo rack, although it looks to be more protected.
Mh, as it turns out, so do the Altay and the Ariete.
