3089 is a futuristic, procedurally generated, open-world action role-playing game. All terrain, enemies, weapons, items, quests & more are uniquely generated. You are a promising robotic android design, made by the Overlord, placed on planet Xax. Your performance in common combat, support & intel scenarios is being closely watched. However, will you become too much for them to handle? What else on planet Xax exists that the Overlord doesn’t know about?

Hullo!

I'm new to the game and while, admittedly, I only skimmed the guides available from the menu, I'm not sure what I did wrong. Here's how my first playthrough went; critiques would be appreciated.

First I followed the on-screen advice and bought a gun (energy pistol) and some armour (torso and legs). I haven't delved deeply into the statistics yet but they seemed reasonable compared to everything else that was on offer. Committed my backup, then took a quest.

As per the quest instructions, first I met up with another android and escorted him a short distance to his destination. The next task was to disarm a bomb - the quest marker went a bit crazy for a while but eventually settled at the bottom of the sea, outside of the starting city. So down I went. I was attacked by a group of androids on the way down. My pistol was extremely ineffective...the shots were not very precise and I must have missed 90% of the time. I managed to take a couple out, disarm the bomb, then made it back to the surface. I was very low on health at this point, around 25%.

The final task of the quest was to make a delivery back in the starting city. I couldn't find a way back in, and as I was swimming around outside I was attacked by another group of androids. Try as I might, I just couldn't hit them most of the time and they killed me very quickly.

Did I do anything wrong, or do I just suck? Thanks in advance for any advice!

I think two thinks are creating more frustration here:

1) Difficulty while swimming in water. There isn't any cover, so you take lots of hits.

2) Difficulty getting back into the base. This can be resolved currently by teleporting back to your backup station via the pause menu. However, I've gotten the suggestion to have some ramps going into the base.. we'll see..

I may significantly reduce underwater visibility to deal with #1 (for both the player and other robots)...

Heh, yeah, that should do the trick! Thanks Phr00t. Oh, and thank you for supporting Linux natively, I'm very grateful for that!

This tip applies to both starting out and any high level area: Only accept quests that don't involve fighting, and if the quest marker is in a dangerous area just accept a different quest. I usually do ultra-safe quests in high level areas to level up then complete hard quests for fun in lower level areas.
