There are lots of articles related to Quake III modding, and a lot of them refer to Milkshape, not blender. I'd stick with Milkshape as the exporters are easy to use.
In addition - use the links pages here and you'll be fine;

GMAX is a good choice. Free, powerful and with support for q3.

Not to mention the literally thousands of MAX tutorials that will work for it...

Gmax is brilliant, isn't it? WELL IT'S OLD, UNSUPPORTED AND CANCELLED!

Which is a bit of a bastard really. I'm glad I've still got my copy. I'm sure there'll be serial keys for those out there willing to find them....

I wasn't aware it was cancelled. I'm sure it's still available from third party sites.

And yes, it is brilliant. The interface of the market leader for free. Tens of thousands of tutorials.

You can download it 3rd party - but you can't register to get a serial key anymore...

another one bites the dust, they say

actually make that two, since the autodesk/alias merge, no MayaPLE either! That requires registration too.

Gotta love these "free" apps eh? Soon enough, only Wings and Blender will be the only free modeling tools ;)

That's what it looks like to me anyway. At least Milkshape is still cheap, although let's face it, it doesn't like hi-poly very much. It's also a question of how long will it STAY cheap?

However, how long will it stay the 1.x version, with the horrible ui and the missing features such as quads and vertex weighting? It's practically the same program it was 5 years ago.

For as long as it's financially affordable?
