1. En.wikipedia.org
2. ebay
3. you can only cheat / unlock stuff, not really edit or mod in any sense
4. depends on the system
5. I don't think so

Actually Ennui is mistaken in a sense. I remember playing around with gameshark a bit in the past, mostly the N64 version. You can create your won codes through gameshark, which is how most of the game codes get discovered. They are not simply programmed into the game like a traditional code. What gameshark does it essentially access parts of the code. Through a series of tests it is possible to discover the lines of code associated with certain things in a game. For example how much ammo a powerup gives you or weapon damage. In a way this is very similiar to modding becasue you are directly modifiying game code.

For example I used gameshark alot with the N64 version of command and conquere. It was awhile ago so I dont remember the steps but I remember that I was able to figure out how to, for instance, increase tha nuke size (the graphical representation of) as well as damage and cost. I say this is similiar to modding, at the basic level, because we can consider modifying a xml file to change weapon damage as modding. Which is what you are doing- modyfying game code.

The "codes" in a gameshark are not really "codes" per say but modifications to the actual game code. Kind of a hack more then anything

The point is that gameshark allowed you to access parts of code and modify them instead of having to input a cheat code programmed into the game, which is intentional. So you can make all kinds of your own codes for a lot of different games. I think however it requires the gameshark to be ebabled for that game or vice versa. I don't remember if that was done through another code or if the gameshark came pre enabled for certain games (the latter I think however.)

Wow I cant belive some one doesnt know what one is. then again its been a while since I have herd any mention of them. I remember my freind had on for the SNES. I dont beleive the are made any more but you may be able to find them in a store like game stop. As far as I know they were only made for consoles up to the N64 generation. Because the game sharks a spicificly built for a preticular type of console that means if your out of luck when it comes to current generation stuff and most likely last generation as well.

I think the most recent system a Gameshark was made for is the PS2...I happen to have one. I'm pretty sure I haven't seen one for XBox, so the PS2 Gameshark was the last generation of cheat devices for consoles that I know of.

Personally, I usually waited to beat a game first before I used one, except in dire need...
