Is some assurance that the games won't go down with the service. If direct download services like Steam or Desura get popular, then in a lot of cases there will be some really rare or interesting games stored on them. I wouldn't want to loose all those games; both the ones I've purchased, and the ones that the company has in it's "vault" so to speak, to vanish.

At the same time, I am reminded of the PSN and I look how apparently the PSN and Steam are now linked (last I saw you could log into Steam using your PSN account). What happens if something like what happened to the PSN happened to Steam or any service like it? Not only could you not play multiplayer, you couldn't play the games.

So what do you all think?

Uhh, the games are still stored locally, you can play games from steam and desura offline, just obviously not the multiplayer parts.

Duh, totally forgot about that. I guess I was thinking more along the lines if Steam or Desura went out of business, I'd like to be able to move my games out of their service. Have like a "Free the games!" button if the studio had to close it's doors.

All our games are DRM free, you can play the games outside the service. Hell you could purchase a game download it then turn off Desura and run the game manually. As for shutting down, ModDB has been going for almost 10 years now. We wont be closing down.

That's awesome, thanks. :)

Of course, there's always the "what if" question, and I prefer to keep physical copies of installers just in case. I always burn my games to CD or DVD because I'm worried that the service will eventually go under. Saying "we won't be closing down anytime soon" is usually a line quoted by many devs and publishers shortly before they go south.

I even archive my Steam games because I know there are "methods" to play them even if Steam goes under or my account is lost for whatever reason. Not only that, but my internet connection is really spotty anyway, and it takes ages to download just a 1GB game. I prefer to (re)install from CD or DVD, but I also like to support indie developers.

At the moment, it's not such a critical question for me. The only games I have on my Desura account are the last two Humble Bundle game packs and the Indie Game Pack games - all of which I've downloaded installers for and archived via their respective websites. I hadn't actually HEARD of Desura until I was provided with a key from them for it, and I like what I see here. The only thing that has been stopping me from buying directly here is the lack of ability to create an installer.

I do think it's great that you can just copy out the folder and ZIP it without any further considerations, but wouldn't the option to create a backup archive with an installer be a good one?

We talked about this in our meeting a few days ago, we need the functionality so expect it sooner rather then later. The way the system is built makes it really easy to generate a installer, its also no skin off our backs if you want to purchase games without the need of the application.

I wish Steam had your guys' attitude about it. :)

I just don't see that you can compare Steam and Desura. I don't think the Desura guys WANT to be compared like that.

I respect both platforms for their choices. And there's a reason the two platforms have their different audiences (both developers and consumers).

But yeah, a means to ensure we could still download our games if a service went belly up (I know steam has the ability to shut down their DRM, but I don't think you can redownload games), would be a great step forward.

I would like a multi-user toggle switch. What I mean is if I'm on my family computer and want some games that we all can play, I would not like them to only be installed locally on my user. I see the point of how it's easier to do it on a one-user basis, but this would save the trouble of installing some games through Synaptic or Pacman or whatever, and some games through Desura. What do you think?

If Steam didn't require you to be online the companies putting games on Steam would just have crap like SecuROM. It doesn't affect Desura because indie devs aren't idiots

How I would wish that was a general rule... I remember reading about SOME(tm) Indie dev that said he doesn't use it because he cannot afford it...
