i think it is very safe to assume that all of us at moddb have very little experience in game desing. Furthermore, our relatively slim knowledge of game design may seem gargantuan when compared with our total lack of experience in the field of game making. Thus, i the spirit of making moddb a better, more educated place i would suggest that every single member who has game industry aspirations read the vast majority of articles found in the link below. I for one have found them invaluable. Hope this helps: p.s i'm aware that some of you might have already discovered this incredible source, this is aimed at the hundreads that havent. -- I want to make a mod like counter-strike but with more guns ,3 teams (maybe),and better gfx !!, |

teh_fonx, I have already read all of the articles at GameDev.net, not to mention saved them to my HDD as .mht for further reference. Gamasutra is good to, but I don't like the commercial feel they have. --

im glad you did frosty, but the vast majority of this community hasn't which i believe is one of the major downfalls of moddb. The overall lack of maturity and principal knowledge of what they are trying to accomplish. I'm sure that after reading all the articles @ gamedev they will be better off for it. -- I want to make a mod like counter-strike but with more guns ,3 teams (maybe),and better gfx !!, |

Lack of maturity and principal knowledge.... that's taking it a little far, isn't it? I mean, I know a lot of people who are making mods that have been involved in the gaming industry in some way. There's people who are doing it as a side project for fun, like Sven Coop. I'd like to think of us as a mixed society, not a maturity-lacking community... -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

im not saying people here are stupid, simply that they lack the experience, which is exactly i posted the link i did, for those who want to learn about game design but havent been able to find any good resources. -- I want to make a mod like counter-strike but with more guns ,3 teams (maybe),and better gfx !!, |

Not all of us are beginners... I've been modding since HL1 came out and have worked on 11-12 projects (heh, I've kind of lost track after ten). Regardless, I believe your approach should have angled more towards providing info to those who do need assistance. Your general selection of words has targeted a portion of the community which I do not believe you have accurately accounted. Can you truely say the vast majority lacks experience? Yes there are those who wish to create mods with a futile attempt, however, there are those who do succeed. In addition, let's not forget that the modding community is made up of modelers, texture artist ect, not just the leaders. I do believe this could be perceived by the fact that those who lead the mods tend to stand out, as they are the one's who are worrying about PR and making posts. I do hope you understand what I mean... it is somewhat hard to explain, for a more insight just review my choice of words and tone, I think you'll understand quite well. - Edited By GeneralTimothyC On Sun 8th, Aug 2004 @ 12:33:12am |

The demand for game designers is far less than the amount of people who want to do the job, unfortunately. You have to learn a practical skill, like modelling or whatnot to really be successful... unless you start up your own company ;D --

lol you still have to know the skills or youll just have like a skinning company not really a team for the first couple of years --

I will also personally be writing up the tutorials for game-specific modding; particularly for Arcanum, Fallout 2 and Daggerfall. --

those are really good articles, thanx. the one about the amature and profesional shareware developer seems like a really good article for us who wish to make a hit mod. like desert combat is a hit, and it's only at version 0.7. takin it slow. thnx again for the articles. |

Stupid assumption! It is 99% not 100% that have very little experience in game design. --

well not really, its more like a 100, considering that i havent seen any members of prominent and accomplished mods actually participate in any real discoussion on moddb. At any rate, like i said this was not meant to be offensive to anyone, so once aggain i appologise for sounding so hostile as it was not my intent,. And Yalldrop your welcome man, i was very happy to have found that source myself, and think its a really incredible resource for people in my position, which is exactly why i wanted to share it with you guys. -- I want to make a mod like counter-strike but with more guns ,3 teams (maybe),and better gfx !!, |

You don't have to make a mod to know a lot about the game industry. I have plenty of contacts in the game industry, through IGDA. Don't have to make a mod to know a lot about game design, especially since I'm planning on making it a future career >.< -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |
