What do you think the meaning of life is? Do you think there is one?

to live life as you please and to live it the way that suits you most. Being comfortable is basically the pursuit of most. Once you get to that point you normaly branch out and look for other things to dedicate to.

The meaning of life is: Existing.

my idea is that do whatever you want whenever you want just as long as you are harming anyone else in the process.

Honestly, I don't think there is a meaning to life. I suppose it depends on the definition of the word "meaning", though; my best shot at defining the meaning of life would be "to survive and pass on one's alleles to a new generation", provided that these alleles are advantageous. Evolutionary theorists would certainly agree.

My more recent interest in spirituality might put forward "to move from a no-saying paradigm to a yes-saying paradigm" (which is certainly a legitimate pursuit), but at the same time, I really don't think there is any meaning to life.

I'm not. Just what I think.

Jun 16 2008 Anchor

well to me that is irrational. to live just to transcend into a higher form of being.

I agree, whats the point in living just so it can be decided what happens to you for eternty. If life has a meaning me being me I would think it's mathatical and not actually a meaning but more a solution.

Well, I think that we define our meaning of life. Whether we think our meaning in life is to honor God, or if we think our meaning in life is to help others. I believe we choose what the meaning of (our) life is, and we think that is the true meaning in life. I believe that it is us that choose our meaning. Sometimes outside influences affect on what we think the meaning of life is. I'm sure some people in a communist bloc nation thought the meaning of life was to be a good citizen. I honestly don't believe in a true meaning of life. So, I think we, ourselves, define it by our perspective of the universe and its phenomonon.

Life is short and dark as deep sea
on the shore of death
my love waits for me
Sail on my vessel,
sail on through my life
Save me from randomness...
also, save me a puddin' tonight

On the whole I think meaning is a concept we've collectively built as a way of deluding ourselves into believing there is a sense of purpose and significance to what we do. People on the whole have become completely dependant on this idea and I know a great many who would genuinely struggle to continue existing if there was no 'reason' to it. And no i'm not some adolescent nihilst-wannabe whose just seen fight club for the first time and has found material to which I can identify my immature despise for generally accepted standards, it's just the more I speak to people and learn about the human race as an overall being the more I see the concept of meaning as being abused and ultimately reducing people to mindless drones.

To a large extent agree with the perspective that we define our own meaning. If I had to believe there was one single meaning it'd be - experience. You get one chance to embrace and share what life has to offer, and given the theoretically endless scope of what that offer involves I'd like to think there's more than enough there to make life a worthwhile experience. Though perhaps this is not the case, as we're all here :-D

I can see a lot of people getting patronising, condescending and arsey about this subject, but whatever the meaning of life may or may not be I can't imagine how in anyway shape or form it could justify how we as a collective species have treated eachother and the world around us.

If there was a meaning to live someone would have found it by now.
It's just a pointless thought to believe something's meaningful about your own existence. For me it's like in a good story: you have one character who changes throughout the story and 90% who stay just the way they were. The guy who changes makes a difference to himself, even though all others will continue living in a way beyond his understanding or approval. To me, Stoicism best represents a possible way of living. I am happy with what I win in live, but I don't mourn for long over my loss, either.
Most important is to look at what you can gain (not necessarily in money), instead of what you might lose, if you continue your way. Optimistic versus Pessimistic approach to life...

We'll never know what's really true until it's all over.
