everybody knows what concept art is, no matter if characters or objects. they are here to help the modeller/texturer to build the final in-game model. now concept-art is something very wide, especially in technics. they can range from rough pencil sketches to high detail inked and colored images.

now the talk topic i'd like to hammer into the round is: What kind of Concept-Art technic do you consider the best suited and for what reason?

thus this discussion should be about the technics of concept-art generation and your personal experiences with different technics. hopefully this topic can be later on a lookup for people interested in doing concept-arts.

happy discussion.

you mean techniques ?

I Just basically draw whats in my mind i rarely sketch model sheets etc dunno why :?

I usually doodle quick ideas then if i really like it and it looks good make it into a final piece for use as pimpage material.

It all depends on if your modelling it or someone else is and there preferences.

I rarely draw any concept art. Sometimes I draw some, but rarely I make them to models. Anyway, I like to draw them simple. If I draw them with pencil, I usually give them some "3d shading". If I make it with some computer painting program I'll make it simple. I use 80 80 80(hex) grey for the background, white is just too bright and hurts eyes. Paper should be white, because it doesn't glow like the computer screen.

Sketches are easy to create on yourself, and basically give you a good idea at what you're modelling :)

Also real-life photos are good as concept art

Be more specific.

Character basic concepts should be coloured sketches, model concepts should be front/side/back detailed and scale drawings.

Map concepts should be top-down technical drawings, paired with eye-level sketched concepts.

Things such as general background, or padding out ideas, should be in colour but very rough and ready.

Basically, everything should have rough sketches, detailed technical drawings, precise drawings from a variety of angles...
