Heres a thought. How about a special hybrid of FPS/RTS/MMORPG set in Starcraft.
Its World of Starcraft with first person shooting and real time strategy element. Players can form a faction with the team leaders commanding others in RTS style. Players can play in first or third person view. You can also recruit NPC into your faction or team (since its tough commanding other players). It would be an all out war between the 3 races and you can join any side and factions you want, with 8 factions in each side just like the story, and you can be any class you want. Through experiences and leveling, you can graduate into more advanced class of warriors, upgrade and gain weapons, damages, defenses, armors, speed, and other special powers. All vehicles driveable and vessels pilotable, and morph for Zergs.
The Terrans relies on range attack, strategy, and teamwork; the Protoss relies on technology, Psi, and etc., and the Zerg relies on brute strength and numbers.

nice idea. I personally havent played starcraft but i would play this. Firstly, a little more detail would be nice, for instance wat engine would it be on? What can you contribute to the mod? And some more overall info on the mod idea. I would think that it would be pretty hard to mod this onto an existing engine, well any that i have heard of, but then again im no expert. I think this would probably have to be on a standalone engine.

Anyway, nice idea, it could work if a lot of effort was put in. I hope you go far.

Well, I am not exactly the one to make the mod, its just an idea, so anyone want to make a mod based on my idea, then they are welcome to.
As for the engine, I am thinking of using Valve's Source engine since I was hoping for the mod to have nearly the same visual as the cutscene movie in the game, but I am not exactly sure if Source engine would work on RTS and MMORPG elements, so if there's a better engine, then so much the better.
As for contribution, well , I can only contribute some ideas, the modders can make any tweak they want.

Source would work for RTS, but MMORPG might be iffy (there's another thread on Source MMOs somewhere...forgot where). MMOs like to use their own engines, although some use existing ones (I think the Unreal engine was licensed for an MMO or two...maybe more).

And I'd definately play this. I've never played WoW, but I've always thought that an MMO based in the StarCraft universe would be pretty bad ass...

Those're my two cents ;-)

Source is not MMO friendly. In fact Source and MMO should not be in the same sentence. Use either an engine that's catered toward MMOs (like the rather new Realmcrafter or the beta Kaneva) or learn to code your own. Otherwise, you're the fux0red.

There already is a mod.. kind of like this. You have some good ideas, and we are doing some things that you just described.

Yeah, but why re-use someone elses IP? The idea is just to Blizzardy to not be shut down. I would like to see a futuristic universe that is similar to StarCraft though.

This is a great idea!

I actually just had it too, recently. Oddly enough.

My idea was to have a guy playing the RTS version, and he's allowed to pick from NPCs or People. When you make a unit, it's either an NPC, OR a person who is online and wants to be the unit.

Basically, the RTS guy makes a marine, and the FPS guy becomes the marine and can follow the RTS guy's orders, OR go do something on his own. Of course, then you'd have to allow the RTS people to ban/kick people from their game, and probably not allow them to do friendly fire, unless instructed by an RTS guy.

Yay, fun.

Thats the same as a game called 'Savage'. It's pretty smart idea, great fun to play, unless your commander is very new to the game or has never played an RTS before.

Thing is with savage, is that it always sucks to be the resource harvester. That sort of thing should be NPC and automated..

Savage came out waaaaay before BF2. Hell it was abandonware before BF2 was even discussed. BF2 stole it from Savage.

Yea this Idea totally rocks. But I think blizzards lawyers would beat you up for using their gameverse. I have seen 3 games/mods on the internet and suspect many more that have been shut down or scrapped because blizzard found them to be an infringement on there creative liscence. A mod for WC3 though has escaped this by requiring players to insert the brood war disk before playing, but that is possibly because they are just remaking the game in the WC3 engine.

But yea this idea is totally rockin. I have always wanted to see a game that combines many genres into one in a massive online scale. I think it would be nice though if it was an original gameverse.

Maybe we can change the name, tweak some of the model and gameplay and add some new stuff of our own, and pray that Blizzard would let it slip.

For Natural-Selection, well, I think its a bit unbalanced because the aliens usually overpowered the marine, unless the marines have a really good commander and that hardly ever happen. Plus, its really frustrating to command a team of players because not all of them follow your orders (I know cuz I command once). Besides, it gets boring if you played too much, that is why theres Natural-Selection Combat.
