Solution to no moddb downloads..... | Locked | |

Simple as this: moderators save up money together to buy a terrabyte or two (a little more then a thousands dollars). that means you dont need to get a server because you have enough space to host more then all the world's mods combined. |

Ah yes, because we're all made of money, aren't we... The mods and admins are normal people like you and me. They struggle to make enough money to support themselves. Besides, they already had Moddb Downloads before. It's just taking them a while to set another server up They just need an acting server, which costs a lot less than a thousand dollars. -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

if all the admins here pitch in evenly, they would only need to pay $62.50. they wouldnt need to pay for monthy bills if they own the space themselfs.... |

Why just admin? If they were going to do something like that, we should all pitch in. Why is it their monetary responsibility to bring you mod downloads? |
||

because we make the mods which make their site important |

With or without downloads, moddb is still awesome, and that's been shown. It's possible to get the downloads elsewhere so I don't see why it is so important as to make them pay money just so that lazy people won't have to go through a few links. |

I think they understand how much it costs to operate a server with downloads, buddy. I don't really think they needed a thread to be made explaining it to them. Hell, Scotty owns a server to operate this site -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

buying 1 terrabyte with each moderator/admin only paying $62.50 once, is a lot less cheaper then paying that much money per a month for a server with enough space. |

Something tells me they'll stick to Oktagon and gamecache.net for their hosted downloads, seeing as how they pay them monthly to do that Of course, Scotty might've stroke a deal with Greg that if he was admin, he'd pay for the server costs. I doubt it, though... Edited by: Karuto -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

Your forgeting one VERY important little thing, bandwith. The space may be dirt cheap, but gettinga fat enough pipe to handle dozens to hundreds or most people costs much more. |

@Karuto : You obviously don't know how this site is hosted. Scott and Greg are good friends, and modDB has been hosted by Oktagone free of charge from the very beginning. And modDB never has hosted downloads. Anyway, the real deal with the downloads, is not space, but as dtd said, bandwith. We're aiming to get a seperate pipe (10mbit or something) soley for the downloads, but they aren't cheap, and we're trying to get the money for this through advertising. Oktagone has been getting more sign-ups because of their exposure on modDB, which helps, but the Google Ads don't generate jack, and GamePanel is the only site to have signed up. We need a steady income to support the downloads. |

Well, it's not like there's an entire section about how Moddb began, so I didn't know what went down when Moddb was first hosted and why the downloads were removed in the first place. The site is getting affiliates with sites like Google and GamePanel, so it's good to see that they're not having too much trouble. I don't know why any other sites wouldn't want to be affiliated with a big site such as Moddb -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

Yes there is! |

Lol, okay, I was mistaken there. What I meant to say was how the hosting situation was set-up. There's no real explanation in there /me bonks self in head -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

Yeah also contributions are out. The idea has been brought up before and since Scott is not having to pay for hosting he dosent want to accept money, but that was before... when moddb really didnt need anything that costed money... I dont know how he would feel about that now --

It was more evident when greg was around more and the site was smaller, so Don't feel bad. But their'd be threads like "I'm donating a new server" or "I ser up a cs server" or sorry about the downtime." |

most advertising is around $0.30 a click |

thats how they screw you on yahoo.com, sometimes you type and the blinking "|" is in the adressbar, and it seems to magically put it in the search engine's box. This gets yahoo between 0.09-0.15 cents a clik, can't beat that. --

You want the server, you pay for it. Because I sure know I need money for things like University fees, a car, you know, real life things. ModDB uses rougly half a terabyte monthly just for HTML. For downloads a whole terabye daily bandwidth would be required. Leeching would be a concern. The issue is not just space, but usage. Edited by: frosty-theaussie --
