Hello all,

I have an above average understanding of overall 3d modeling, however, I've never really understood how to proper design and model outdoor environments, creating landscapes, terrains, hills and valleys, this kind of stuff. I've tried techniques like height mapping and applying deformations to subdivided planes and still trying to achieve the results I want, therefore, I'm seeking some advice from more experienced artists.

Are there any videos, tutorials on this matter? I've been searching but still can't find any good material, I seems like an impossible task for now, hopefully I get past this learning curve.

I use Blender.

Best regards!

You can certainly adapt this to Blender, but this is a great tutorial.

What are you trying to create the terrains in?

Just a 3d modeling program or an actual engine?
Because UDK has a great Terrain/Landscaping tool.

I'm very sorry, I wasn't keeping track of this post any longer...

I'm only interested in extracting the .obj file to be exported to my game engine.
I am a bit familiarized with the UDK engine but Blender has a very good tool to model heightmaps by sculpting, just like mudbox. Besides, doesn't UDK need licensing in order to one using it as a third-party software for his own project?

No you only need the licensing if you sell the game and make a PROFIT of $50,000+ for UDK
