So anybody ready to give some first impressions on it? has anybody even got it yet? i just ordered mine and it should come in friday or saturday! let me know what games you guys have enjoyed and like.

Mar 24 2005 Anchor

I will definitely be offering my first impressions. I ordered it about a month ago, and I'm going to get it today when GameStop opens (the first time anyone can get it if they reserved it there). I hope I can go early so I can avoid the rush, because even if they have more than enough units for everybody, I want to be one of the first to play that baby :D

I have preordered the PSP, and Metal Gear AC!D. I will offer my impresssions this weekend, because I want to be able to play a lot of it first (not to mention, I still have work :P).

Heh, I watched the PSP launch live on GameSpot. I really don't like portable gaming consoles, but I'm having second thoughts. The PSP looks like a lot of fun, so I'll probably get one eventually.

I just got my PSP, Lumines, and Metal Gear AC!D. It's a hell of a lot of fun! Lumines is such a frickin addictive game, I love it!

Once again, full impressions this weekend :D

If you like dead pixels then that's fine by me but I ain't getting it for their poor manufactured quality efforts. System specs hype can go suck themselves if they can't maintain quality control with the produced products.

I'm not getting any of the new generation handhelds, but I would wait for the Gizmondo, it looks amazing so far. IMO the DS looks tacky and old already, and the PSP is... the PSP.

the only way I'd get a PSP is if I didn't have to pay for it. So I'll probably try out that free psp thing.

I should find the news articles where Sony was sued multiple times successfully for putting technical problems that would require returning on PURPOSE.

If they drop down in price a heap load, I might get one. For now, I'll stick to my DS.

I like my PSP, so far nothing bad has happened... It's great! Better than when I tried the DS. Speaking of which you should go and see if there are any store that have a PSP for public demos.

Australia buddy, Sony haven't even bothered to slate a release date for us yet, and gathering from time it took to get it out in the USA, we'll have it by the time that technology costs $2. :)

What are you talking about? All you've heard is small occurances, which obviously will happent when it's something that Sony has just begun to do. I'm sure there were plenty of systems with 'dead pixels' when the original Game&Watch and GameBoy arrived. I have my PSP, and I can say right now, there are no dead pixels on the screen whatsoever. Sure, there may be some bright spots, but that's normal for an LCD screen, as well as with the case of dead pixels. It's not a sign of malfunction at all. It's just something you have to deal with.

The PSP has great quality, if you actually picked one up and looked at it. All you're doing, Cheap, is basing your information off of opinions. Try one out, and you'd realize that this one hell of a handheld, in a very good way. :)

EDIT: @ ShortCutMan -- Well, if you're not a fan of movies on the PSP, you can always import the system from Japan. It's built region-free, so you can change the language to whatever you want on the system (including English), and play any game you want on there, whether it be from Japan, America, Europe, Australia, etc. However, you just can't watch movies on it. That shouldn't be a bother, however, since you'd be getting the system before anyone else, and you can still play music, games, and hold photos on there :)

every single nintendo ds i have ever seen has had at least one dead pixel - im extremely overjoyed by my psp...the quality of the lcd screen blows my mind. i bought twisted metal, although a bit dissapointing, its got online play that i have yet to try. Load times = bad though, but your pretty much getting a portable ps2 here, so its worth it.

@ karuto - you got metal gear acid right? how the hell is it! i couldnt find it anywhere!

It's great! It takes a little while to get into the story, but once you do, it feels like another great Metal Gear experience. The card battles are done amazingly well for something that they've done for the first time for the series. Although the pacing of the game has slowed down, you still feel that intense atmosphere, not to mention the action keeps you on edge like the other games did. I love it :D

But I love Lumines more. It's so addictive. You feel like every time you rack up a combo, it really pays off in the end. When you play the 1P Challenge mode, you can unlock more skins and music, and once you do that, you can switch to the other mode and play them as much as you want, offering some real nice replayability.

I love my PSP :D

I know its Region free, I'm a veteran of portables, having owned every GameBoy bar the GBASP (Too small for my hands), and the Virtual Boy (I was still a casual gamer back then). Importing is stupid, its too damn expensive to do so. Not that I'd care about the movies, its a rip off having to pay twice for it on DVD and UMD. CD format for a portable is a bad choice anyway, with the heck load of streaming, and IMO, they'll be easily damaged in some way or another. May not be from stepping on, or damaged while being carried around, but CD's are more susceptible too damage from intence light, etc.

I don't know who's going to win between DS and PSP. DS has had a HUGE head start against the PSP, dispite being less powerful and having less features. (This does remind me of the launch of the PS2, having a great headstart against the more powerful GameCube, and also more feature rich X-Box. And, thinking about it, with the PlayStation and Nintendo 64. The N64 is more powerful, but it got a late start, and didn't fare to well against the PlayStation.) I think the PSP's biggest competetor is going to be the GameBoy Advance, since, well, its out-sold the PlayStation 2. Handhelds appeal more to the younger audience, there's no doubt about it, and the high price tag of the PSP doesn't help it there. I can't see it going any lower for a little while yet either, due to the insane amount of technology packed into it.

As with any true Hardcore Gamers decision, it all boils down to the games being released on the handhelds. Which is why, despite being a Nintendo fan all along, I am considering an X-Box for a few games that are being released soley on that. If there is anything worth buying on the PSP, I'll grab it for sure.

However, my final verdict is that the DS has more potential in inovative games than the PSP. If only they had spent a bit more time refining the definatly bulky design, and even changing the second ARM7 processor to an ARM9 too allow more power in the unit. I have faith in the Game Boy evolution and we'll have to see what Nintendo have in store with that.

major pest, you want a pic of my DS, not a single defect

Mar 25 2005 Anchor

i dont think its really better or worse... i like the DS and the PSP (i'll be writing my impressions this weekend) and theya re both good. i mean, it's really your perception that creates better or worse. In sports the losing team isn't the worse. they played differently and their outcome wasn't favorable to them. it doesn't make them worse is the thing... they just don't play appropriately.

worse is a concept though when you attach those labels to things you commit to judging them. and sadly judgement is just a barrier.

handhelds suck, thats all i can say. especially with a psp your like hmm i gotta go down the street and get that thing oh well ill take my psp, *locks door* puts in disc *loads* *disc comes flying out* *puts in disc* *loads* *gets back home while still loading*

thats the only thing i feel the DS has over the psp is load times but they both sucks
