Philosophers P R O J E C T

Hello, My name is Vincent G.(A.K.A. Z3R0X). I am the Mod leader for the Philosophers Project and I am today going to tell you what my vision is for this hl2 modification.....

The Philosophers Project is going to be a total hl2 conversion based on the legendary tactical espionage game known as Metal Gear Solid, created by award winning director Hideo Kojima. Unlike almost every other modification of hl2 I've seen (in progress or already created and ready to play), the Philosophers Project will combine the art of great story construction and the action and suspense of a great game into one amazing product. I'm happy to say there are people that agree with me on making a mod with more story than action, and some mods are atempting to do it, But there are those who like games with more action than story. I am hoping to achieve both a story and action game into one product, but i need the help of skilled individuals to make it happen.

F E A T U R E S
brief summary of the games features......

Many amazing features will be made for this game, one of them being enemy AI. For this mod, AI will be of the upmost importance for the enemy, to make them think and act like a human. If any of you have played any of the games for the MGS series, AI for the enemy is almost undistinquishable to a human's and that's what I hope to acheive for this mod. I also plan to make beatutiful and realistic enviroments of the jungle and man-made structures. Another undecided topic was if I should make it 1st or 3rd person, but a solution was made that it will be both 1st and 3rd, so people are able to enjoy the game in two diffrent ways.

S T O R Y(public version)
My public version of the story. This might change in the future but this is what it stays for now......

1990, The Gulf War. A conflict that not only included the coalition forces of the United States and the insurgents of Iraq, but was also acted upon by the rest of the political world.

While some of the countries of the United Nations started to eye down every move the Iraqis made in Kuwait, a new, and even bigger threat, was in the process of being created in the most unexpected place and time…..

July 1990, People’s Republic of the Congo. A secret rebellion broke out against the demands for a multi-party democracy for the government of the People’s Republic of the Congo. The Mysterious, and as of now Unknown, leader of the rebels had a conference with the president of the People’s Republic, Denis Sassou-Nguesso, about his mandatory demands. The Rebel leader told Mr. President for him to contact the United States and for them to meet his demands, or else he and his men will launch a full scale nuclear war.

Nguesso, knowing that he cannot control this type of situation due to an advent of an unstable government system, does not hesitate to call the United States about the situation.

At first, the US didn’t know if this was some kind of hoax of if it happened to be a real threat, and they didn’t want to transport troops there to make it a public affair or waste them on some half-baked scheme. They decided to send one of their prized tactical spies from REDFOX to do the job, Reina Soldado. Her mission was to find out where the exact location of the Congolese rebels was, what they were planning and eradicate whatever there plan was.

August 14 1990, People’s Republic of the Congo. After a few weeks of heavy surveillance on the rebels, Reina radios in vital information about the construction of a nuclear walking tank that could change warfare as we know it. This project is occurring in a secret base around the highest peak of the Congo, Mount Berongou. Reina also discovers that these rebels weren’t working alone, but were also being supported by Russian forces since the beginning of the revolt.

At 11:45 that night Reina sent her last radio transmission which was overwhelmed by a great amount of static and gunfire in the background. Her message stated, “The legacy has been fulfilled.” Baffled by this last transmission their agent sent, REDFOX has no clue if she had a weak signal, was captured by the enemy or worse…..

August 15 1990, REDFOX agency, USA. With the US leaving this whole engagement with the REDFOX agency, the department has no other option but to end it. Without them knowing if Reina is capable of completing her mission, the agency has to send a back-up team to accomplish it for her.

Amongst these collaborating spies is a man entrusted with a legendary codename… A man with the alias of Snake

P O S I T I O N S
By the words of wisdom from PinFX(HLFallout fourms, View Post)....

The amount of work required to create a game or even get it started is a massive amount, you need the help of determined individuals with these skills in order to get anywhere.

And these are the types of people that are exactly needed for this type of game to become a sucess. This is a list of current positions that are open for anyone that wants to join the team:

~Programmers(For this mod we are going to need very skilled programmers to make it a sucess, if any skilled programmers need a challenge, I'm ready to put you up to it)

~Modelers(skilled modelers are needed to create the vast amounts of guns and characters for the mod, there is one but many more are needed)

~Mappers(Very Skilled Mappers needed to create amazing enviroments such as the jungle and industrial structures, there is two but more are needed)

~Concept Artists(Needed to concept characters for our mod and bring out their unique details, there is one , but we need more)

~Sound Artists(skilled composers that will bring out the feel of the game, all open spots)

~Voice Actors(People that have the skill and the emotions of an actor to play out scenes and dialogue from the script, a couple of more spots open foir this one)

~script/Story Writer(will assist me on making a great story for the game, story writers are full, maybe one or two can make it really full but i need script at the moment)

~Web Designer/assistant Master(somone able of desgining a layout for the website and assist me on controling it)

~Assistant Leader(knowing that I am only an amutuer at mod desgin, I was hoping if anyone would assist me also on the whole mod[there is one leader right now, position taken..])

Did you get permission from Konami to a do project such as this? You don't want to be close to finished with the project and get shut down by a Cease & Desist Letter.

And waht can you bring to the project? That gets other people interested, although I seriously doubt you're going to find that many people to work on a mod here, seeing as how most of them are busy with their own mods. You should also wait a while before hiring Voice Actors. For a project such as this, you're going to need them about a year or two in the future.

hmmmmm help is in EXTREAM short supply, yet you ask for every position availible. and what is your input to the mod? and dont say ideas man because ANYONE can do that, its not really a hard or helpful position.

This sounds pretty cool but dont hype it up like this and have it crash and burn after a few months. Like Spitfire 2 said you might want 2 pick up a skill as well because its pretty hard 2 get a whole mod team. It does sound fun though...

On a 2nd thought, i might be willing 2 join your team if you can just get a couple of more people that are willing 2 stay with this mod. I have little to nothing 4 skills in the "key" roles like Mapping and Programing. But i could help with the script and sound. I am also learning 2 map as we speak but have nothing 2 show you. I can work on the mod often and this summer would be great 2 start as i have nothing 2 do. My email is SuperRad987@aol.com so contact me and tell me how u feel. Plus who could resist a MSG type mod!!

It is against the rules to ask for an entire mod team, which is what you are doing.

First of all, take some advice from the other guys...

Lose the "I need an ENTIRE mod team" thing

Also why not try making original characters, rather than leeching from a popular franchise?

Thats the great the thing about mods.... its your rules.

You dont have to call your main character SOLID SNAKE (which btw sounds really gay).. you could have a guy called... agent 69

Or whatever.. try being more creative.

The next stage would be to plan out on paper what you want in the Story, which you say you want to be awsome. If you're not good at mapping you could at least draw out some rough level designs, then ask for a mapper to help you create a test level. But dont expect an entire mod team to land at your feet.

One last thing: Ippo made a very good point about prioritising the help you need. Lets face it your not going to need voice actors until the maps are designed, built and running.

I would say your main priority just now would be coming up with a cool main character, the agency he/she works for, and the predicament your character has to solve.. etc

Then move on to basic level design and get hold of a mapper.

Good Luck :)

Yes, and this is what i'm doing exactly. only about 15-30% of the mod will actually include stuff from the MGS series. I make up the story and everything that has to do with it.

Also everybody needs a team somtime, so i thought it would be a good idea just to ask for voulenteers for postions that were not yet taken. And i deeply apologize if that was a offense to the rules of the fourms, I did not read them correctly and I will review them over

Hate to break it to ya, but Agent 69 could be alot gayer :|
Especially when infiltrating a group of sex-depraved male mercenarys.

I'll admit, I never saw what the appeal of the second two Metal Gear games were. The first was great.

It was a joke... just making the point that you can have a bit of fun with a mod, its really boring if you just use pre-existing names etc.

True, thats why my mod will have 15-30% of MGS stuff in it. I want to make my own story but place it somwhere in the MGS timeline. Like for this game, it will happen before Metal Gear(NES)and after MGS3(PS2).

Jul 6 2005 Anchor

Won't that be Metal Gear Solid 4's timeline? :P

Konami will never let you make a mod like this. They're still making games for Metal Gear, not to mention they're more than protective of their properties. Forget MGS, and try something original.

Have you considered that you'll probably get a cease and decist order slapped on you for making a mod based on the MGS universe?

First MGS4 is defiantly after MGS2, it will not counteract with what I'm doing(my timeline is set in the 1990's).

Second I sort of understand that they are protective of there property, but I am not using anything directly there's. The walking tank's name is not Metal Gear and the main character's name is not Solid Snake. I'm gonna do almost the same thing Konami did with the movie Escape from New York[1981](**Press on the poster of the movie at the top of the site when you go to that website and look at the second picture.... Tell me who that looks like and look at his name for the movie :P ..... coincidence?? I don't know but if somone could give me an explanation it would be nice :) **)

I seriously only want to make this mod so people could enjoy it on there computers. I've encounter plenty of poeple that really want this mod to become a sucess and I want it to also. If I do get slapped by Konami it will be for my own good(by the way I did try to send a letter to KONAMI and they didn't answer back). If this dosen't work out then at least I get the experience of trying to create somthing wonderful. But I don't worry about the downsides to everything, and I do plan for this to work out. People all you have to do is have a little faith, which alot don't considering how many people have to say that my "idea is crap and will never work out"(that quote was from another forum that I am from). I also understand that some people say it for my own good also saying "not to waste my time with it", and I appreciate anyone who says that to me, but I will still do it anyway for the experience...

Well actually thats the cover art, he was probably only made with about 15 pixels on NES ;) The Kurt Russell look-a-like didnt come around until much later in the series.

But yeah I think you should go ahead with your idea, nothing wrong with starting a project, even if it never gets completed, you'll still probably learn a lot of stuff.

I started Red Doom in March 2004, believing I would have it finished in a couple of months, this is July 2005 and Im still working on it. (although the project has evolved a great deal over the last 10 months)

Kurt in that movie looks more like Big Boss from MGS3 in the Movie than Snake from all the other games(because of the eye patch). But his name in the Movie "Snake Plissken" was used for all the Snakes in all the games and Iriquios Plisken in MGS2..
