Next Generation Consoles - Death to PC Gaming? | Locked | |

David Carnoy of CNET.com recently wrote an article on all of the evidence of how the Nintendo Revolution, Xbox 360, and PS3 are all factors of the death of PC gaming. The question remains, is this possible? Should we really take this into consideration, or shrug it off and forget all about it? |

Well, if you think about it, all of the good PC games are coming to consoles, so that could contribute to the story. However, like it or not, PC Gaming will always be around in one way or another, so something like this won't happen anytime soon. It'll have to take until a console can perform the same basic functions that a PC can (desktop, upgradeability, etc.) in order for people to even consider this scenario. It shouldn't be shrugged off, but at the moment, it isn't a serious situation. PCs always pull ahead after a year or two of a new console's release, because the same technology you find on a new Xbox will soon be available for the computer. -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

Look for example at UT2007, graphical you could also call it the death of concole gaming. I dont think that PC Gaming will die. -- |

Well, no matter what happens, I know I'll be a true PC gamer at heart. Even though I always have the latest games on the latest consoles, that doesn't mean I'm not a PC gamer. You know what I mean? |

please don't start this discussion again. there's already a topic that got hi-jacked with it. especially since for some reason both parties are stuck on 'wrong' facts trying to beat each other. just to sum up: pc: console: now go ahead and build your own opinion. i'll not state mine. |

PC Gaming will never die... As long as we got leagues supporting competitive gaming, and interested people in developing games, pc gaming will be immortal... There will always be consoles, but the graphic cards and programmed skills of a computer is better than a console... Edited by (in order): Stallion001, Stallion001 |

another opinion presented as fact :-P the majority of pc/console hybrids are just FPS or 3rd person there are 1 or 2 adventure (syberia, myst) but thats about it now.. heres my opinion on the whole thing These next gen consoles MAY put a dent in the PC gaming market if they take advantage of the usb ports that have built on if you hadnt noticed, most Mice and Keyboards are USB these days so here you hvea 500$ 9ghz machine, hack it, put linux on it, mouse + keyboard = ubercheap PC you hip? |

and what does this USB help you? how does the API handle it? if you've got a keyboard, mouse and an FPS go play it better on a PC instead of a console where you can not modify things. what keeps games good are the MODS (at last with the majority of games). but exactly this is what consoles do lack as this would make them a PC and hence there is no reason why to not take a REAL PC in this case. |

Well I prefer PC gaming because of the simple reason that I find it difficult to aim a gun on a controller. I am alot better using a mouse. I'm sure many people would feel the same way. PC games will never die out! -- There are no more original ideas. You just have to hope your ripoff is better than everyone elses. |

Yeah, im the same way... why i cant stand playing halo2 on xbox.. would <3 to play it on PC |

Ah, yes! I'm able to adapt easily to any game on the PC using the mouse. However, on a console, it always takes a few hours of playing. I definately agree with you in that statement. |

I didn't mean literally, fool. I just meant that the majority of Triple A games are coming to the console, including Far Cry, Painkiller, Half-Life 2, Doom 3 (obviously already has), Battlefield, etc. Even MMORPGs that used to be restricted to PCs are coming to the console. It's kind of impossible for each and every game that people consier good to make it to the consoles unless they had a service for such a thing. Try not to attack my choice of words, because I did say that PC Gaming will always be around. And the fact of the matter is, consoles always put a dent in the PC Gaming world when a new one is released, so it isn't like we're still waiting for it or something. -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

unfortunatly they do: they lower the quality of pc-games with their crappiness ... best example Deus-Ex 2, NHL 2005 many others who got 'craptasticle' due to 'console compatibility'... >_< Edited by: Dragonlord |

computers can do so much more then any console can, and play games just as good if you have enough $ |

playing an fps with a gamepad is simply not as good as playing with a mouse. PC gaming won't die. -- Defeat in Detail 2 - Standalone RTS Game |

Please, remember that this thread is about whether or not next generation consoles are the cause to the death of PC gaming. Not PC's themselves. Please, read next time... |

I agree with Mauvebib. I wouldn't trade my PC for all the consoles in the world --

I can't wait for the look on people's faces when they get viruses with their new, super-duper next generation consoles. But uh... getting back on topic. Computer gaming will never die. Neither will console gaming. A console is just a mass produced computer with tons of restrictions. And some people like the simplicity of that. I'd rather build my own machine, thanks. consoles are just... consoles i mean, you know if you are only a gamer you'll just get a console instead of a PC but if you like to chat and visit sites and need to use some of the computer functions u'll probably use a computer and also play games in it... well i think both are going to be alive for a loooooooooong time and i mean LONG time, L-O-N-G.! -- **wearing a christmas hat since xmas 2004 ** ThAt'S ThE sPiRiT! new e-mail addy, check profile |

Consoles are nice, because you know the games are going to run ok, and there isn't all that much that can go seriously wrong with a console. But they aren't going to be the 'Death of PC Gaming'. There is a massive PC gaming community, and that isn't going to just dissapear because the games are being ported to consoles. Edited by: a_llama |

In the vein of games, consoles appeal more to the casual gamer because there is no installation, no problems, and it just works from the get go. For PC's though, you've got the added benefit of a far better online structure no matter what way you look at it. Also modding of course, something that can't be done on consoles. |

at last years e3 (unsure about this years) there was a big deal of APEX's 'DisCover' technology, which allowed INSTANTANIOUS game installation and as for modding and b)quite a few new console games are coming with map editors |

The death of PC gaming? Hahaha. Yeah, right. That will never, ever happen. No matter how good a console is, no matter how fancy or mind blowing it is, it will never be better than a PC. That's just not possible. And there are tons of people who don't even pay attention to the console market and strictly play PC. |
