I'm new to 3D modelling and have been learning blender for a few weeks. I figured I know enough to start modeling something. This rifle is a not too distant future (give or take 30 years) sci-fi assault rifle that has a modular design (you can change the barrel/handle size, change calliber, adjustable sight, etc). Here's a few early sketches. The model looks different because the rifle wen't through a couple more concept stages because I was dissatisfied with the look.

Well here's a model that I started after I made a drawing I was satisfied with, it's in pencil and paper and I don't have a scanner. It's not quite finished, I've yet to add the sight, some details here and there, mount rails, stuff like that. It took quite a while since it was my first crack at it. I had to start over a few times but I think I got the hang of it now. Any criticism to help me improve is welcome. It's at about 1300 poly's atm.

clip and magazine is just different way to call it, doesn't really matter as long as we understand what it is. As for poly optimization, it is important to have a habit on tris control and distribute the poly equally into each part. And it is hard to remove triangles while keeping the same detail after the model is finished.

For switches use textures for that. They are small details anyway and not exactly important.

Thanks for all the comments. I'll continue work on the model when I have the time.

Oh, and there is a difference between clips and magazines. Magazines are in a case and have a spring to load ammunition. Clips have exposed bullets on a strip that you use to load magazines or load guns like the M1 Garand. I just noticed the mistake on the sketch drawing, it's an old drawing.

Yeah I done a lot of research on guns lol.

Clip is simply a common term is all really, just a nickname sort of. In all cases they are referred to magazines but some people say 'clips.'

From what I understand... "Clip" is more commonly a reference to the Handgun type and "Magazine" to the likes of Sniper Rifles, Semi-Auto and Automatic Rifles and the likes etc. etc.!?!?!?

Hmm, I'm not doing anything tonight, I think I'll continue work on the weapon. I'll post an update when it's ready.

technically, a clip is what they used to call a 'charger' which on (for example) an SMLE rifle, you'd place the clip into the top of the breech with the bolt open, and then push all the round into the mag.

I thought on those rifles though they had magazines that attach just in front of the trigger guard?

they do, but, but your only issued with one or two magazines, and 24 chargers (clips), the weapon can hold 10 rounds (9 in he box magazine and one up the spout)

Anyway, thats the difference between a magazine and a clip
