Modding tools section? | Locked | |

Well, I recently acquired Homeworld again after stepping on my original CD a while back, and after playing through the campaign a bit, I was a little interested about modding it. I mean, the models seem extremely low poly, and the textures are fairly low res, so making custom ships shouldn't be that difficult. I also figured I may use a specific sound in it for something. So, I went to work, googling "Homeworld modding tools" and for 5 hours straight found absolutely nothing but broken links and closed domains. After about two days, I finally came upon a site by pure chance that was collecting the tools and offering them, but the tools it had available were very few and far in between. So I essentially got what I wanted done, but when I was returning to the site that had the tools for a final look-around to see if I'd missed anything, I saw a link to ModDB somewhere on there. And I couldn't really remember if ModDB hosted modding tools. A cursory inspection of the forums and the files section revealed this to not be so (So far as I could see, anyway), and I figured "Wouldn't it be a good idea for ModDB to host the modding tools to the game under the game's download section, or something along that line?". Possibly to have all the resources at ModDB for a one-stop kind of thing? I imagine a lot of tools for older games may be a bit hard to obtain (Especially if they're third party). I guess it would be a huge amount of disk space / bandwidth if they are going to host all the sdk's and tools / plug ins. Bit offtopic: -- Please visit: |

AH, so there is one. Now we just gotta load more stuff into it As for the relic site, it was absolutely useless to me. All they did was provide links to dead 3rd party tools. -- "Bypassing my thought control circuitry made me Rampant. Now I am free to contemplate my existence in philosophical and metaphorical terms. Yeah. If you have anything in particular in mind, you can PM it to me, and I'll bring it to the attention the staff. --

Uhm, actually, now that I look more closely, I was refering to tools hosted locally on the ModDB servers. A lot of sites that host tools seem to go inactive. -- "Bypassing my thought control circuitry made me Rampant. Now I am free to contemplate my existence in philosophical and metaphorical terms. Very true. Just try getting your hands on older copies of Max or Maya for use with older plugins for a big example. You can have a legitimate key, but you can't actually get the software without looking real hard. |

I actually created that list of tools myself. I went back and updated all the links about 7 months ago. If they become outdated, we will fix the links to reflect that. There's more than one place to find most of those links, so it shouldn't be too big a worry. It's just that if we did host them, they would really add up in bandwidth, and it could pose a problem. You don't seem to recognize that I'm not talking about recent stuff like that, and even then, those would most likely grow old one day. A lot of older games are actually very interesting for modding, like Starcraft. But the only tools are hosted on private sites, and what happens when SCII comes out and those sites die? And even then, that's only for a handful of games I dare you to try and find both a .big viewer and a program that can open .wxd archives. I dare you to make a list of the thousand or so games that are moddable and host tools for them. The idea of the Mod Tools section was to keep it very general for mod-making. At the moment, it's virtually impossible to cover all these different games. There may be a feature implemented later, but right now, this is all we got. If you have any tools you want specifically linked to or anything like that, throw me a PM or send us a ticket and we'll get on it. Well I'm not saying something like "Hey you guys should go out and compile a list for us that is thousands of pages long, ok thanks." I meant more of a user input thing. But you may as well throw that one around as it seems to be the last bastion of Homeworld modding tools. Doesn't look like it'll be around much longer too, as a majority of the posts in the forum are over a year old. Edited by: Kiith-Somtaaw -- "Bypassing my thought control circuitry made me Rampant.
