Mod "Stalking" - Any experience with it? | Locked | |

Please forgive the term, it may be a bit excessive, but that's the only one I could come out it when thinking of this. I'm not going to accuse anyone in particular, so I simply want to know if I'm the only person here who has recently noticed "Mod Stalkings". In other words, because certain people think the internet and/or the world of gaming aren't big enough for two mods which might become rivals in the future... well, they go for the "ultimate choice" and start spreading misinformation about the rivalling project. That and a flood of incorrect info which, apparently, don't make sense. To be honest, I don't see the point in taking advantage over a potentially rival mod by using stuff like IRC to spread misinformation and indirectly claim that their mod is so much better because their rival is awful. That is even worse if those individuals used (or even use) to work for the very same mod they're blaming and think to get publicity for other mods... Why wouldn't people simply wait for releases and see the results before arguing? Have you ever had experience with unacceptable events like this? If so, how did you react? |

It's ingrained human (for human, read male) nature to form small-ish cliques and fight competitors for resources/territory. Just got to adapt around it. I take it this has been happening to you? |

Not directly (as in when I was present) but I was recently informed about that kind of weird events. As I said, I don't really see the point in doing that. |

It's just unsophisticated behavior. If it's too much trouble, you might as well tell the mods but most of the time it's nothing really serious. Personally I wouldn't want to get into that kind of stuff so best thing to do is to stay away (don't bother interfering/etc.). |

The point of something like this is probably: making other mods look like crap because their own mod is of a lower quality and therefore doesn't get the amount of attention they would like to get. |

Your points are valid, and it is my intention to behave as if nothing happened. It's quite absurd to experience things like this, they go well beyond constructive criticism (which is completely different giving the fact that, at least, normal criticism is based on the result of someone's work). As metalspy pointed out, it may be a matter of childish jealousy. |

Ive seen two occasions where this has happened (competition between other mods and the one i was working on that is) ... both times were sort of a passive competition though where the other team doesn't even know about it ... When we were developing, and we were having a lot of trouble getting people to notice our mod ... and in general we would look at other mods and compare ourselfves to them ... We could outmatch people on content and quality but still could not get the amount of watchers they had ... it was definitely frusterating ... (infact i think i even suggested something along those lines in an article subtly ) It never devolved to spreading rumors or even messages to the other teams, but we were definitely cynical about other mods and jealous of the attention they recieved ... Well, I know the numbers of watchers and positive comments may have their influence on the behavior of a certain team, but what I've been experiencing goes well beyond the civil rivalry on ModDB. Spreading false information throughout IRC channels, where statements can be hardly checked, is something people can hardly accept... |

Its what happens when a mod team is lead by a 15 yr old smart arse. (Or someone very, very immature) Ignore it, let people believe in whatever they want to believe in. You'll always have a few loyal watchers and despite the loyal ones, 50% of watchers will most likely not pay any attention to the e-drama/mod-politics that spread. On a moderator friendly place as ModDB, retaliation will only make things worse for yourself. Edited by: Lucífer |
