I was wondering the other day...do you guys think the age of a game engine can discourage people playing mods for them?

I mean if you were chosing between two similar mods to download, say one for Half-Life and one for Half-Life 2, would you download the HL2 mod first because the engine is better?

I know that just because the engine is better, doesn't mean the mod will be any good to play, it's just that it seems to me that people are overlooking mods for old games which are still great fun to play in favor of something newer and flasher.

Hmmm...this could just be me of course. What do you guys think of this?

I still play all game engines no mater how old, Just the other day I started playing Duke Nukem 3D, and the Simpsons Doom mod again.

If I had to pick HL or HL2, I would decide on what discription interested me more, then look at the graphics etc.

With the load times associated with HL2 and steam games, I wouldn't touch most Source mods.

Sorry, but I prefer applications that can launch and get me in-game fragging in under 5 minutes....

Depends on the actual mod.

I like old stuff with new flashy effects.

i go with SCM here too, it depends on the mod in question. i know a lot of mods (for example Poke646) which have graphics as good as medium hl2 mods (except of normal mapping 'course) and plays much better.

but in general older games tend to give born to higher quality mods as they are longer around and better 'known' by the community than the newer ones.

Meh, doesn't really matter to me. Like I picked up BG2 not long ago, and I really liked it, to me the HL1 weapons and alpha maps didn't matter, but I liked it a lot because of some of the Source effects, the nice smoke and fire. Meh.
