start at modding quake1 (look at www.inside3d.com) , it is easy and you can modify nearly everything you want:)

I'll have an article published on the 31st about making a mod from start to finish, if you can wait :)

You don't want to learn visual basic. You want Visual C++ 6.

Unfortunately coding such as that isn't available on an A-Level course. If you want to learn C++ there are numerous directories online that can be of great service. To put it honestly, the A-Level course won't teach you squit, but it will give you a slight helping hand, as you'll get used to different coding methods and variations (or you should....

Also, only basic HTML? Brush that up in your spare time to, add in Javascript and build up in complexity, it's a good place to start (heck, I started on HTML, then built to javascript first about four years ago, I'm starting to fully comprehend C++ quite nicely now, and in the mean time I'm dealing with a nice proffessional looking website, three or four mods and numerous other projects. It'll take a little time, but it's not such a difficult racket to get into after all :) !

Learning QuakeC first is a big help. Once you understand/modded QuakeC you can take on any Quake based game.

I'd agree, QuakeC is easy to get used to, and there are a lot of simpler modifications to the source that you can take on before moving on to successive bigger and bigger projects. You can start with Quake 1, but I found it easier to dive in at the top and work my way down, Quake 3, then 2 and finally 1. It's also nice to see how they developed over the years - you'll be surprised at the lack of difference between Q2 and Q3!

I can't resist, here's the first page

Many games today are capable of being modded, in which people can change many aspects of the game, essentially making a new game. Modding is an old art, dating beyond the release of Quake. With all these years of modding behind us, there have been many mods created by those who set forward time and effort to create envision their dream. Modding is time consuming since there are many aspects to making a mod, coding, mapping, modeling, etc; in this text when I refer to a mod I refer to a total conversion, where [almost] everything has been changed, not just a few small features.

The most important step in making a map is a good plan. If you want to make a mod “w17h c001 gUn$ @nD $h1t,” forget it, you need to have a real plan. Start realistically, you won’t make a great mod the first time you try to. Try modding something simple like Quake, get a bunch of your friends together, and try to pull off a simple mod. It won’t be great, probably not even played, but you can always try improving the mod to make it better and better. When you are drafting up your plan, think of your main objectives first, other things like weapons are considered secondary. Take this for example, you want to create a mod where you’re part of an elite crime syndicate; breaking into vaults undetected, and vandalizing museums might be the primary objective, but having really cool weapons that destroy unprotected electronics might be a secondary objective.

Hl isn't too bad to mod as far as I've been told - the Novell engines are mostly C based and not too disimilar from most C languages. Grab the source code and get rolling :)!

You want to dive into C++ so soon?

Find the Microsoft visual c++ 6 Introductory edition. I forgot if it was free or cheap, but that's what I used.
