To paraphrase the one question in America: The Book

"What [franchise] do you imagine will take [Star Wars's] place once [Star Wars] eats itself, then shits itself, then eats its self again, then finally shits itself one last time. Answer in tears."

Eats itself -- The prequels (although I actually liked Episode I!). Letting SOE screw up SWG. Cutting half of Republic Commando's campaign, then cancelling a sequel that would include it. Cutting 3/5s of KotOR 2's story. Forcing Battlefront 2 out years early, leaving tons of content that only modders could restore. Ending Rogue Squadron 4's development for the Wii. Beginning strong denial that fans are getting tired of not being listened to. Increasing focus on 10 year olds.

Shits itself -- Star Wars: The Clone Wars 3D animated series. SW: Republic Heroes. Imperial Commando 2 is cancelled. TFU has multiplayer, but is cut, and never restored in TFU II even though they had enough development time to pick up where they left off. TFU II is completed in a day by millions. Lucas Arts attempts to apologize for TFU II being to short by charging people for DLC at a price of $1, even though they already just stop 80-60 dollars worth from people already. Guybrush Threepwood is now an unlockable character in the Force Unleashed II. Ahsoka Tano is ranked (for some inexplicable reason) as a valid character by IGN.

We've got only two steps further, is how I see it.

I expect J.J. Abram's new Star Trek storyline and the Mass Effect games to fill the void once Star Wars finally becomes nothing more than a funny idea that is hidden in the back of our closets -- long left to rest after going out in a marketing-parade infused puff of smoke.

And since I'm feeling in the mood to further emulate Jon Stewart's genius book idea:

Discussion Questions:

1. You discover the source code and beta/alpha for JK4. While playing it, you discover the main character is a cowboy who whines more than Darius Mason, Carth Onasi, and Ethan Mars combined. Do you delete the files? Why, or why not?

2. Attempt to explain a way that George Lucas actually does care, and he just has a funny way of showing it. Express you answer in the form of a man who is trying to save his own ass.

3. Why are Twi'leks found so attractive?

4. Watch the SW:TCW episode "Landing at Pt. Rain". Explain how many tactically flops they make before the battle begins. Winner with the most flops gets a free demo for their Xbox 360 to let them try Star Wars: Republic Heroes.

5. How is it Kota is the only character in the The Force Unleashed that seems to have depth in the first game, while Juno is the only one with depth in the novelization, yet Starkiller still fails to have any sort of development in either format.

6. Which is more powerful:
A. Genetic Modification ala Bioshock
B. Force powers
C. The BFG

1) No. Because it doesn't matter. Developers always keep backups.
2) uh what?
3) Because most of them are fit women? And fit women are usually sexy?
4) No
5) Well both "Force Unleashed" games were obviously rushed through development. So probably because of that...
6) Force powers > BFG if a jedi/sith can absorb the power. If not then BFG wins everyday because it kills everything thats on your screen (except bosses).

....you lose 5 experience points for taking a (clearly worded to be silly) batch of joke questions seriously.

I was a Star Wars enthusiast. Until the day Ahsoka Tano came on my TV screen, I knew more about Star Wars than I probably should have.

Now it's been ruined. The best I can do is pretend all the Star Wars canon and level of quality is still fine, they're just taking an extremely long time making KotOR 3, RC2, a patch to make SWG good for everybody -- and that they're still just working on Season 3 of the micro series episodes. And that they're on hiatus for new novels after Legacy of the Force finished.

But please, defend the logic-less management is now in place. Defend the (lets make 10 new characters that kids will buy) thinking, the (who cares if we shove a game out 3 years early?) mentality, and the (who says we need to be mature in every media that isn't printed?) decisions. Because I spent many years of my life in love with Star Wars, and it took them about 3-4 years to get me to this point.

Yeah, there has been a lot of star wars junk coming out recently. I thought TFU was pretty good, but...yeah. They just HAD to make a sequel, didn't they? The sequel was nothing more than a quick grab at more money. As for the clown wars, I watched the 2008 movie, disliked it, and never watched the show. As for SWG, did you here that they're shutting it down in December? TOR is taking it's place. Don't even let me get started on KotOR 2...

LucasArts: Is the game done yet? Don't answer that, just wrap it up and lets release it!

Obsidian: But the game isn't done yet!

LucasArts: We don't care! Just release it! It's KotOR, no matter what, people will buy it.

Obsidian: But-

LucasArts: Shut up! Just release it!

Obsidian: Okay, you're the boss...*Releases the game*

LucasArts: Ha ha...Wait, what?! People don't like the game?! Something about it being unfinished?! What is this?! Hm...Not many people are buying it...Oh well, lets just cancel the third one!

Similar story with TFU^^
Luckily, modders managed to restore most of the cut content :D Thumbs up to you, modders!

ANYWAY, I'm still a SW fan, despite all this recent nonsense. I actually liked episodes 1 and 3, although 2 kinda sucked a bit. I just ignore the clown wars show and games. I also don't read any of the books, so SW for me is just the movies, and most of the games. As for SW dieing...Well, lets just say I don't see that happening any time soon ;)

Most likely it'll outlive any of us (as it probably already has).

I see no reason to complain about the current state of things. Even before you were born the series has had Ewoks overthrowing the Empire with slingshots, the infamous Christmas special, and some games that are not anything special (like Jedi Arena). Yet despite these flaws the series has still managed to make billions in the following decades. Just like any other franchise that has managed to last so long, it simply has some hits and some misses; the same year that gives us a game like Dark Forces 2 or X-Wing vs Tie Fighter can also deliver such 'gems' as Masters of Teräs Käsi. It's not like the series is suddenly aimed at a younger audience now that the Clone Wars series has a stylized look, you might just be seeing it now that you're feeling old enough to be an adult but young enough to realize there's not a lot of difference. The movies have always been targeted towards a general audience, with the merch geared towards the younger crowd because that's where the money is. That's nothing new for any franchise that has a toyline, trading cards, coloring books, bed-spreads, underwear, cereal, bathroom sets (including soap), water slides, etc. If you're worried about them introducing characters for the sake of new toys or think thats a new development, there's a bucket a few feet away from me that includes figures of a medical droid from Hoth, Lobot, Dengar, Snaggletooth, and three people I can't even identify except for the fact that they were somewhere in the background on the Death Star or Jabba's palace. Like who the hell is Snaggletooth to Star Wars that I have a toy of him? I see an original Y-Wing and Cloud Car too, which means I'm probably taking about a total screen time of 38.2 seconds here. And again that's not recent either, they're all from 1977-1983. Of course the special edition trilogy coming to theaters also served as a good time to relaunch a new toy-line 16 years ago which set the stage for the prequel line and then the CW style line or whatever else you're seeing today. It's old business.

Personally, I think it's a bit of a shame for anyone to think a 70s space opera (or anything else from one's childhood) should suddenly be more mature for them now that they're older. There's a good deal of fun left to be had with such things; all you have to do to enjoy it is set a course for the second star to the right and go straight on till morning.

Side note, if you ever get a chance to look through a book containing some of the original concept art, I'd recommend it to see just how close Yoda came to looking like a smurf (complete with a mushroom hut), or the many revisions that went into the Starkillers/Skywalkers and their designs/stories even during production.

Actually, the Clone wars movie/tv show is a LOT different than the movies, not counting the looks. I have nothing against cartoons, but just listen to the dialogue!

Still though, the CW doesn't make me like SW any less, I just don't watch it ;)

Star Wars went south the moment Lucasarts were forced to churn out racing games.

I'd have to disagree: pod-racing for the n64 was a blast, and when you create an entire universe filled with all sorts of species/cultures/technology that has been going on for so long, it can be nice to be able to explore it more outside of the main story. That's what I loved most about some of the books and the D&D version.

There were very good games under the SW logo and soon KOTOR:OL and Battleground 3 to follow

I will get ban for this:
