Hey folks,

I remembered a thread in an old gaming forum I've been quite active on in the past. The idea was that people who have some time work on requests by other people. They concentrated on creating avatars and signatures mostly. It was quite a popular thread and over time more and more people joined to help out and there was no request that didn't get finished within a few days.

Since I'm always trying to work out stuff every day for practice, but often lack the motivation or idea, I thought that I can try to combine those two right here.

This is how it goes:
- You request the kind of Concept Art you want (f.e. Character Design, Environmental Painting, Weapon Design etc.)
- It's best, if you can add reference material for me to look at. So I know in what kind of direction you want it to be
- I'll try to come up with a sketch at least, if everything works really well and I can keep the flow going there might even come out a full painting
- Only one request for each person a day

Keep in mind that I'm not skilled in every area and lack quite some experience in some fields. I'm going to try to work on requests daily, but I can't promise anything right here. Of course, it also depends on how many requests I get here.

Also, sometimes I might not be able to come up with something good, because I simply lack the knowledge/practice in that field. However, I'm always going to try my best on it and come up with a sketch at least. You can check previous work of mine in my profile and on the Mindworld indie game page.

If there are any questions left, don't hesitate to ask. Otherwise, get those requests coming!

Do NOT send me request via private message, simply write your reply in here.

cheers.

This thread is just for my art though. It's not meant to be a general helping thread.

Why don't you find a solid, working mod team, instead? I get weekly assignments in our team and I strive to complete them all. There is no need (or time) for me to work on anyone else's project(s). I think it's important to stick to a theme and game, since one of the most important features of a good concept artist is persistency. The worlds created must not fall apart or artwork look too similar to each other, but at the same time it must keep diversity and recognition level high. For that is important to work within one game universe and make ones own work recognizable, as well as making each area drawn unique.

It may sound harsh, but too many people start mods and don't have the knowledge or maturity to even get past the initial stages of design. It's probably a better learning curve to just copy drawings from any anatomy book, than to work for unproductive projects. It's frustrating too, if nothing ever is made from your designs. And if you're hoping to get some great ideas through these kind of projects: think not. It's often the generic ones that scream for concept artists first.

Working on an indie game or mod that has a design document, some kind of future perspective and a universe that doesn't fall apart after 24 hours is much more gratifying and creates a kindof discipline, necessary in concept art. I rarely get to draw and paint the things I want, but I learned a lot from dealing with stuff I never drew before. So that's the one element you might be after: learning the unknown. That however, will also work better with a well-established team, since things tend to get deep only in the process of development and iteration. A lot of ideas are coming from discussion among the team - which means you need a team that's able to discuss things, first.

It's a kind-hearted idea of yours, but offering services to everyone reduces the worth of your work. If you are putting in time and effort, and are willing to do so for a year or more, on a consistant team, your help should be valued a lot. If you decide to be jumpy and work on everyone's projects for a bit, you will probably shoot out some concepts, but they will lack refinement and variation for the most part. Find a team that lasts and you will not need side jobs for a long time.

@SinKing:
I mentioned that I'm currently working on a big project of my own and I'm doing Concept Art for it for 5 months already. I never said that I'm looking for various teams and challenges because I don't know what to do with my time. Instead, I said that I'm working on that indie title and I'm looking for additional challenges to work on each day for practice and fun only.

If I would only stay with that project I would be developing Concept Art in the themes of surrealism and science fiction for the next couple of years and that limits my skills a lot after the project. I still take life drawing classes and other drawing courses, but I don't see any negative effect of helping people out and be willing to try everything I can do achieve every style and theme I'm asked for.

cheers.

Does the project the request is for need to get a public release and all? Because I'm still in need for a character design for my personal practice project but I can't think of a fitting one. It should look quite plain and simple and fit this style Media.moddb.com . I doubt that would really be fun and a challenge to do, but it never hurts to ask right? ;)

I work on everything and only ask for crediting my work, if it is published somewhere with a link to my profile on ModDB. Whatever you need, give me as much information about what concept you need and I'm going to work on it as soon as possible.

cheers.

Hi,
I'd appreciate a concept for a game tile unit based a fantasy imperial era that would fit the mongolian empire.
The character/unit is a air combat unit such as a zeppelin, ballon or other manned flier. The result from a concept will translate to fit into a tile portrait and a small character animation that will lift out of the portrait.
The following is a sample found from google image results, to convey my my thoughts:

Thanks.

I haven't actually spoken with our project's leader about it yet, but if you're interested, over at Moddb.com we're trying to nail down an art style (specifically an environmental art style). You can check out the images there for further reference material. ;) I've been working on the aesthetic, and I'm trying to get a slightly Mirror's Edge-vibe to it, but so far I'm finding it difficult to get "inspired by Mirror's Edge" and not just "Mirror's Edge." If you're interested, contact our team leader (Alex). Any help we can get would be totally awesome! :)

@LeeIII:
I've started a quick sketch, I didn't have much time today, because I've been working for 11 hours. I'll have a bit more time tomorrow, I think. More material could be helpful. Are you looking for something like steam punk air unit?

cheers.

Thanks iQew,

I like steam punk, plan to go that style in another game. But here I'm looking to imitate a fictional imperial age. So just shy of steam punk by cutting the fancy sci-fi style of it. I hit up some more google image searches and came up with the following. Left: Avatar and Leonardo, Right: Mongolian style and a character sheet that stood out to me as fun.

@LeeIII:
I did some more tries on that one, but didn't come up with something really good yet. Tomorrow I am going to give it another shot and look for some additional material to help me out :)

In the meantime I did some quick and easy 2D orientated painting for an indie game. It shows a rough idea of how the world could look like:

I'm going to try it at least! I've been doing wallpaper designs when I started learning Photoshop 5,5 years ago. What are you looking for? A pencil drawing or something or just a wallpaper design?

I need you to draw a middle aged guy in an office wearing skinny glasses, a white lab coat, a tie, grayish bron hair, and very short, VERY small wrinkle under his eyes, also, he has stuble as facial hair.his pants and shoes are black, his tie is red, and he's stapling a note to a board saying:
