Flagship Studios is an old school company that closed back in 2008 due to financial problems, but now they are returning with a new owner and a whole new staffing team.

Hey guys, Cole here CEO of Flagship Studios, Since they closed in 08 after some DCMA problems with blizzard we have gathered funds from around the offices here in Colorado to re-open the studio and begin making video games once again, even though we may be stuck with using Unity and A lot of other free software at the time being we are at least getting back on our feet.

So my question in general is to the whole Indie DB community of if anyone even remembers Flagship Studios or has ever heard the name? Maybe even played their old video games like Hellgate London or Mythos, Which the original CEO's still hold rights too so they are no longer apart of our new studio...

So leave your suggestions or game suggestion or hate letters to this thread and we will gladly get back to you with a response!

-Signed Colefrick [Aka Cole William] CEO of FS Studios

Our current team is about 6-10
We have
3 - Graphic Designers
3 - Audio/Voice Actors
3 - Scripters & Terrain Designers
1 - Intern [Does paperwork etc]

So yea, Small team but since we are making our first Comeback game free we plan not to have to worry about it that much.

Best of luck Cole! I hope you are able to do some cool things. In response to your post:

1) 2008 is not old school! Even in an industry as new as video games, 5 years is still new! :)

2) "Stuck" with using Unity? Unity is amazing! Embrace and be happy about it.

3) Did you guys just purchase the name? If the original CEO holds the rights to Hellgate and Mythos, what else was left?

Again, I wish you much luck and good fortune. Running a company in this industry is not easy!

I remember a Croation mapper, who made awesome maps for Hellgate at the time. I don't know what became of him or if he is still making games today. I was pretty impressed back then.

You can use UDK for all your prototyping needs. When you decide you want to sell the game, you pay 90$ for the license and that's that. If you earn more than 50k, you pay 25% on what is beyond that. Example: you make 60k, you pay, 2500$ to Epic (50k free + 25%/10k). It's not such a monstrous deal. Unity is awesome, if you have a great coder and some time to develop your concept. It's also great if you invest some money into content, like AI or some proper shaders (unity is the only engine I know where you have to buy a 2-sided material ^^)

On the whole, I think a well-equipped Unity will cost more than commercial UDK, unless you plan on making huge amounts of cash. Anyway, best of luck. Why exactly do you keep the old name? Do you plan on making games similar to Hellgate? I'm looking forward to hearing more.

The rights of the NAME were let go when they Closed in 08.
Hellgate and Mythos are still held under a Patent/Copyright so we can't even think of touching them.
We have hoped that we would have gotten applications from old employees of the company for getting a job but sadly reading the leaving message before they fully went away made it seem like they all went to blizzard.

Unity is only a temp engine for our first FREE INDIE GAME we are making. Once that gets released we plan to expand out to UDK Commercial and then contacting all ESRB's and so on...
To answer the last part we plan to try to make something like Hellgate but due to Patent issues we might have to go on a different path than what it used to be..

Did you buy their offices, facilities, equipment or just the name? If just the name, why did you think that would make people want to come work there?

UNITY is a lot more powerful than you think.

Why is contacting the ESRB at the top of your list?

/confused

I remember Hellgate London. Sadly, due to lack of money, it went under my radar...

Good luck with your comeback! :)

Sorry i wrote the ESRB part late at night...You know how that goes :P
Also we bought actually a few studio things from them with the purchase of the copyright stuff.. It was a pretty interesting day when we got it here in Colorado! It was like Christmas!

UPDATE UPDATE ABOUT HELLGATE LONDON

We were just informed by our Legal Department that Hellgate London's copyright holders ran out of money to withhold the copyright contract... Sooo.... We will maybe be continuing the Project!

Also Update - We got our forums up and website designs are being finished...

Sad Update - We use Skype as a secondary line unit for when our main office phones were being installed..So idk if anyone has experienced this but with Windows 7 - If you open ANY program that requires use of Speakers/Microphone it cuts off all noise and only way to fix it is by restarting...If anyone knows how to fix it please reply...

I remember Hellgate:London, but I never played it. If I remember it used the source engine, and was one of the first to do so?

Colorado, huh? I'm over in Denver. Ever go to the CIGDA/IGDA meetups?

Good luck with the new studio! I'll keep my eyes peeled for news from you.

Why did the original studio receive a DMCA from Blizzard? Looking at the studio's wikipedia page, all that's mentioned is "financial troubles". A DMCA takedown deals with copyright and intellectual property. What were you doing?

Blizzard got pissed at the old owners because they screwed over a contract they made about merchandise...

We are trying to get the word out that we are NOT CLOSED!

We are OPEN now!
