Just a quick post to let you guys know that a high definition texture project for the original DX game is currently underway. We have 13 members and are retexturing package by package. Also, new models are being done for the major characters and objects.

Check out our site Offtopicproductions.com for more information and to see some examples (screenies) of our work done so far :)

Cheers for readin'

confuses me now a bit... doesn't TNM (the nameless mod) already use some HD stuff made? or is that you?

Basically we are the peeps that brought the original HD texture stuff - but with a new name a bigger team and a whole lotta spunk ;)

Jimi? You are kidding me right? -> check this out:

Those are both new versions of gunther herman and as you will see a vast improvement on the originals :)

All new characters have fingers too - not that the originals didnt but these ones will be coded in the SDK so a character will scratch his chin properly etc etc so expect some funky new animations. Speaking of which - the dance animes for the characters will be improved so they dont look like they have a bad case of piles or something lol.

I think they're already good looking. I'm not saying yours are worse. Of course they look better if they have noses and ears and eyes modelled like that and have fingers. Remember to model toes too ;P And teeth. Fingernails? Toenails? Each hair modelled(this would be really insane)?

Nice mod idea.

I read the blurb about the lack of world texture modification due to a techincal issue?

I hate to be a naysayer, but if you're going to make uber good looking statics and character models, neglecting world textures entirely invalidates all of your work, and will probably widen the perception that something "aint right" if you are viewing a well textured high poly character standing on a 128 * 128 patch of blurry ground.

i would say anyways that the lighting code is a bigger problem. higher polycount can ease this problem but not wipe it out. but anyways... the great thing on DX is the gameplay and story, graFX is additional ;)

No the problem over world textures was fixed a while back - world textures/item/object and character textures are all being redone now. This was our original intent anyways its just we thought we might have a scaling problem with the brushes but we found out that there was a simple way to rectify it :)

Maybe if they hadn't made DX2 so crap, they wouldn't have to close :P

And also hadn't made Daikatana so crap either. But Deus Ex and Archantrox were cool, so its sad yes

that with ionstorm sux... but after DXIW it doesn't surprise me. they had nice ideas but stripping the game of all the beauty that DX made the number 1 has been a little neck-breaker. shows once more: never strip a game because of crap-box (erm... x-box)... it's a bad idea ;)

i have a deus ex 2 tshirt, it is probably the coolest tshirt i own.

but the game i was not so impressed with

the whole 1 ammo for all isnt right. just.. isnt right.

anachronox is fuckin-a though, if you havnt played the game, i suggest you google for the movies
(a year or 3 ago they released all of the cutscenes in like..avi format, so you can watch them all ((long)) and get the story minus playing, and the story is almost better than the stunning gameplay)

Feb 11 2005 Anchor

why do people hate deus ex 2 so much? i like the physics on the console and the freedom was fun too. deus ex 1 may be better, but that doesnt mean deus ex 2 sucks.

anyway...sounds like a great idea, but how are you going to make textures even more high quality?

Dragonlord
Dragonlord Linux-Dragon of quick wit and sharp tongue

i try to sum what the problems are, but also the good parts.

deus-ex shined with a very well thought out story, a gameplay which gave you freedom in a way fps players see it only every hundret years or so, a very well designed gui and hud which combines the important infos and usability like not many other games and allowed the player to really play the game in a non-violent way if he wanted to (goes into complete freedom).

the good points on dxiw are the physics. the rigid-body physics are one of the best i've seen so far. leaving a lot to desire are though soft-body physics (smacking people is like smacking sex-dolls). the lighting is also a nice thing although eating speed a lot. although not having soft shadows (no, bloom is NOT soft shadows it's full-screen AA overclocked) it looks better than for example hl2 (even with soft shadows there... pityfull). dxiw also sports the same freedom as dx but then the fun ends quickly.

now what the problems are. one is the gui. you see clearly it's console based and thus all the glory of mouse-interaction has been stripped out. no more jig-saw inventory (it's a bit ridiculous to say a rocket launcher takes as much space as a candy bar) but a cubersome console-button-musher inventory which does everything but not what you want (especially the multi-function tab key is like a pain in the ass). people can argue about the hud though. i personally do not give minus points for it as it is an experiment. having only one flat health meter incontrast to a body-parts-oriented one in dx is a major downgrade like the absence of a gui system. you can no more try to guess codes on a door neither can you 'manually' enter them. half of the fun searching for codes is killed like that. also only 8 lines of text on-screen is laughable at 1400x1050 resolution and makes you feel like playing a crappy console and not like playig a pc-game on high resolution. also mentioned the unified ammo system which is a pain. if you overused in dx a weapon you had to use another one, thus you had to decide what you want to do. in dxiw you just stick to one gun (most times the SMG with shrapnel and damage-enhancer) and never touch another gun. and if you run out of ammo, wow, you can't even use the pistol. the end-result is that you start using only the batton at it uses no ammo. in general you feel like somebody has cut-off like 80% of the game and left you with it alone. also the bio-mod system leaves to desire. it's a bit crappy that you can change bio-mods all times. i collected once all bio-mods and noticed that you can completly change all your bio-slots once with them (each bio-mod level 3). it takes out all the fun and kills replay value (as you just can probe a mod for a minute and kick it). also a let-down is the story. if you dug out even the smallest story gimmicks in dx like me (played it at last 8 times through) you sit there and wonder wtf those guys thought while doing the story. come on... nicolette duclaire would never have become what she is in dxiw now. also for those having looked a bit closer pay attention to the church woman (and think a bit as something does not match up at all there with history in dx). don't get me wrong though. the story inside dxiw works out and will surprise you... but not with something that matches the dx storyline (and hence surprises you as it doesn't work and is not expected).

overall dxiw is not bad but can't stand up to dx. i would have prefered less graphical gamblings and getting rid of console-compliance as the primary subjective and this game could have been another game-of-the-year.

David - many of the ingame textures only sport a resolution of 64 ...we are bumping these up to 256 (the max the old engine can withstand) and believe me - it makes a HUGE difference :)

I agree - DX2 was rubbish - for me personally I felt it was very very shallow storyline wise compared to the original.
