It actually sounds pretty interesting, and he sounds like he's serious about what he's getting into, which is making a mature violent MMO that is actually free. The way he works it out is that, from a business standpoint, you can turn advertisements on that'll be part of your UI (user interface), or you can decide to turn these ads off. The catch is, if you do have the ads on, you get an experience boost. So, the hardcore gamers will actually have ads on both their UI and in the game itself.

He plans for this to be one of the most violent games in the market, which he is honest about. His words: "I'm not even slightly worried, because violence in games is just an issue if you're not being honest about the violence in your game [laughs]. You know, if you're being straight up and you say, "No, this is a violent game. I'm doing all my best to make this a violent game." We're not making this for childrenat all, we're making it for adults who really enjoy a hardcore, fantasy world. The game will be M rated from the start, and we're not going to try to confuse anyone with it."

So, hey, let's hear it for a Western MMORPG that is actually completely free to play, and it's from a legendary game designer. That sounds like a good deal to me.

2Moons to slated to release in 6 months, with the closed beta test running in 3 months. Here's to hoping he pulls inspiration from MDK and not Enter the Matrix. Here's the official site: 2moons.acclaim.com

Dave is one of legendary game designers! Too bad that he didn't manage to make any good game lately - but both MDKs and Earthworm Jims ROCKED!

It's worth trying, but I've never been a fan of gamvertisments, or MMOGs.

But that's the cool thing, you can turn the gamvertisements off if you want to, and you still won't have to pay a penny. It's his attempt at trying to bring people into the MMOG genre, because people are still playing your standard console and PC games. It's a pretty good first shot at the MMORPG genre for Dave, imho.

I dunno. This seems kind of iffy to me. It's a great idea, but I have a feeling that some problems will crop up when those who allow ads are more powerful than those without. I've actually supported ads in game worlds (generally only if they're set in "our" world though... see SWAT 4) as this doubles to bring in some extra cash and immerse the player in a sense of realism. Obviously inconspicuous Coke machines would be distinctly out of place in a fantasy game, but I can't help thinking a little moving flashing annoying ad in the corner would be very distracting.

On a separate note, however, the game itself sounds pretty cool. It'd be nice to get an MMO that isn't aimed at all ages, move things into a darker, more violent territory.

weak looking armor that has super strength with obvious vulnerable exposed areas (especially the cleavage) check
generic fantasy male humanoid ogre monster concept with an uninspired twist (HEY LETS STICK A FACE ON ITS CHEST) check
obligatory fantasy female face close-up check
emo warrior check

Alot of cliches in mmorpgs nowadays, jeez. And i won't be surprised if its cover has a redhead in armor with the first letter of its title looking like a sharp blade or so.

I agree with him. We need more interesting MMOs like Auto Assault and less of the same fantasy stuff over and over and over and over and over.

It's a Western game. You don't need to appease Japan. -_-

All of Cheapy said was an assumption. They're just concepts. Wait until there's more to show than only 4 pieces of work.

are you all seriously that ignorant? Cheapy has single handedly pointed out everything you loathe to admit! nearly every midevial mmo follows identical conventions, especially the whole boob armor thing and letters on the box being shaped like blades, not to mention "yet another twist on the same old fantasy creatures you've been killing for ages"

5 bucks says the entire project gets canned, have you ever seen this guys track record?

the only things he's ever made of value were the Earthworm Jim games. You'd seriously consider playing a game made by the guy who did Enter The Matrix?

Im actually looking forward to All Points Buletin, from the Creator of the Grand Theft Auto series

The difference is, this game is absolutely free, and this isn't some licensing project Dave is doing on the side. This is something he's always wanted to do. It won't get canned, because they're only 6 months away from finishing the project. If you looked past Enter the Matrix, you'd see games like Earthworm Jim, MDK, Sacrifice, Messiah, and Wild 9 (one of my favorite games). I don't think you should it off so quickly is all. There are 70 people working on this project in order to make this a success, and you'll very much likely see it pull through and I bet even becomes quite popular. One look at Gunbound, and a free game can be quite successful.

I don't see what you mean by his track record. Even Enter the Matrix sold over a million copies, no matter how much flak you give it. I can say without a shadow of a doubt that the only thing Cheap did was look at the first picture, because that's typical Cheap. I stopped caring about his opinion a long time ago (like, when I first arrived in 2003 :P).

EDIT: And by the way, Dave Perry isn't creating the game. He's directing it.

being free you can do no wrong. If a game sucks and its free, all it is is an attempt on making a good game and hopefully experience for the developers to learn from their mistakes and fix it up. If its a great game you get a great game for free. There is no losing when its free.

The other three are concept art. The first looks like every RPG released in the last 10 years.

If you don't like it, don't play it. It's free. The most harm you can do is download it. It doesn't take anything away from you, especially anything from your wallet.

The catch for it being free is probably a quick publicity stunt, as with that "violent" claim too. It'll probably be a classic bait-and-switch vaporware story, because frankly, who would want bankruptcy out of all that server stress of a large amount of free accounts signed up every hour? Perry is a desperate sellout.

This ambitious dream won't go far, I'm sure.

There's advertisements in there that make up for the costs of the server. He's not a desperate sellout, you're an ignorant idiot. It's like if Dave Perry made a standalone mod. He's admitting the fact that the game will be violent, and will be M-rated. It's called telling the consumer what to expect out of a product. John Carmack says the same thing about his products, about how violent they will be.

He has big plans for a game like that. He even said he went to Korea and was amazed at how many popular free MMO games there were over there, but almost none over here. He wants something that people can try and see if they like without a price for admission. You're outright bashing the guy for working on a free game. Stop with your nonsense.

Why the hell are you posting in this thread in the first place if you don't care about the game? All you do is troll, troll, troll. Just leave it be.

Even though they say 'entirely free' i think they imply Free as in Guild Wars, not free as in "you're free to make a thread on moddb and bitch about people who disagree with you"

sorry but when I want to play a fantasy game I don't want a streaming ad featuring Marvel's Ultimate Avengers 2 in the room, even if it were for free. Ads would ulitmately break the fantasy atmosphere and would not be worth playing.
