From our About page:
"Bum Life is a modification for Half-Life2. It's primary setting is a modern city. Bum Life's central idea is to have an incredibly open gameplay style, interactivity, and rich detail that enhances interactivity. (For example, as a rule players must be able to enter all buildings within the game). Players will be able to walk, run, jump, drive, swim, fly, and take advantage of various means of transportation.

As of right now, the game-modes will encompass only two major modes of play: Free-Roam and Riot.

Free-roam is the thinking-man's Bum-Life. It is a peaceful setting in which players can explore, build, and interact with the city - in many ways cooperatively. This game mode is the fun, cooperative, singular or group play aspect of Bum Life. While it has some weapons, they are limited and most of the weaponry available to players will be those used to interact with their surroundings. There will be a multiple number of vehicles included.

Riot encompasses the competitive aspect of Bum Life. All AI controlled NPC's are removed from the game. A large number of weapons are added, and different kinds of vehicles are spawned (multi-player vehicles with mounted weapons, for example). The sub-modes for 'Riot' are:

1 Deathmatch

2 Team-deathmatch

3 Capture-the-item
(An item will be spawn at each side of the map, and the teams must capture both of them.)

Planned features include a player-attach system (select an ally and spawn at their location), a universal experience system (regardless of server) and clan system. "

Put simply, Bum Life is a Multiplayer mod with two modes- Free roam (AI NPCs galore and non-competitive for the most part) and Riot (competitive game modes with weapons, etc.).

Bum Life is a new approach to modification- it has an entirely different goal and setting from the traditional mod.

We're progressing well in the modelling department, concept art, and sound- and our concept for our mod and first build is firmly settled upon for the most part.

However, we have some very important positions to be filled:

Coders
Modellers
Sprite Artists
Animators
Skinners/Texture artists

As the Half-Life 2 release draws near, Bum Life is going to need to start development quickly in order to have a timely release with the large number of planned features and gameplay involved. Experience is definitely needed for the coding position.

Thanks,

Mark "OtakuMark" M.

I like the free-roam idea, sounds great. Sorry I can't help though, but if I hear of anyone available i'll tell them to drop you a line.

hmm, ok, lets get some clarification, check our mod ( Moddb.com ) and make sure we're not going to end up with two similar mods...

Close, but not really.

The major similarities are city setting and freedom.

However, Bum Life is different in the other aspects.

Btw, for voice communication with the mouth moving, HL2's face-poser system allows you to input sound and have the players face automatically move with it. We're going to see about putting that system in-game, you should do the same.

I don't think we'll have money unless game balancing requires it, and universal experience is planned.

The Face Poser system is in the game hotspit. now if UT2k4 has something like this that could be implemented that would rock as well. I had no idea on the Face Poser opition, that is a unique feature but you'll have to have a slightlly at the endge of today's technologlly advanced systems these days to be able to get the graphical goodness.

I'll have to admit: I'm a scalability addict. It's my strong belief that every game needs to be so scalable it can play on just about any computer I can throw at it. For example, I got Tribes: Vengeance to run on a 400Mhz PC. I think, while 400Mhz is fairly improbable for a minimum spec, lower end systems should be able to play.

In short, the ingame face posing would be an option. :)
