Is anyone out there interested in an 'Action' Doom 3 modification?

The basic criteria for making the game 'Action':
- Lethal but inaccurate weaponry (e.g. realism)
- Wounds & bandaging (go hide and bandage after a fight or you bleed to death)
- Location-specific damage (headshots kill, leg shots make you limp)
- You get what you start with or steal from dead enemies; no loot in the map
- Balanced weapons; whatever weapon you choose should be a matter of style, not power.
- Lots of windows and props breaking and bouncing
- Kicking and jostling when you jump at or run into someone
- Get a point when you knock someone off a building to their death
- Maps of 'normal' settings - e.g. cities, office buildings, 'Doom 3: the amusement park'
- Usually played in a round-based teamplay mode, but DM and normal teamplay should work OK as well.

Work to be done:
- Coding for wounds, bandaging, kicking, and jostling, and setting weapon parameters; maybe some coding for breaking and smashing.
- Mapping to make some new areas to fight it out in
- Textures to make the game feel more happy and fun - I think a more colorful setting with some funny posters & billboards and stuff is a good idea. This isn't supposed to be horror!
- Modelling so we can make some variety of machine guns and whatnot
- Website design so people can actually learn about the game without saying 'lame site man!'

Why the game is fun:
- Fear of death because of lethal weapons (frustration)
- Comic relief because of kicking, stuff breaking, and funny stuff in the maps (pleasure)
- Skill in the game is possible but you can have beginners luck (so new players can still get into it)

Drop me a line if you want to make this! If there's enough interest we can get started.

"- Lethal but inaccurate weaponry (e.g. realism)"

that is not a good idea imo. that means no matter how good your im is, somone will still kill you if he gets lucky.
but hey, what do i know. gl with the mod tho. :)

It'd better be like this, otherwise it shall not hold the Action Doom title (because it does not deserve it)

look this is a suking thing anyways.

this entire accuracy thing is done kinda suking most parts. mostly the code is a like that if you aim at a spot the shot is randomly sprayed. with certain weapons like an SMG gun this is true but with most guns the inaccuricy is not that big that you miss target if you can aim... unfortnatly having this random-aim all the good players are fuked and some lucky-shoter wins the race. take a look at the original ActionQuake or ActionHalflife, then you see the problems or how it should be.

do you people even know what hes talking about ? the most legendary and long lived line of mods to date, starting with action quake 2, i think you'd need to contact the original mod makers firt.

Well you guys are right that I should be careful about stepping on the toes of the original Action Doom and Action Quake makers. The "lucky kills" thing is intentional, it means even if you suck you might have fun anyhow..

yep... nothing against protecting n00bs and lucky-shooters but if you get easily owned by lucky-shooters it plainly sux. better make an option for the admin to put a label on a server like 'for beginners', 'for pros' and such and then make for example the lucky shot thing only for the beginners or fun servers but leave it out for the pro ones which like to show what they can do, not how much luck they have.

guys trust, me, you have to play any of the action mods (quake2, half life, there is even one for quake3) to understand it. Its not really luck based, infact it emphesises finnese, just try it with an open mind and im sure youll love it.

note:
i played Action-Quake and Action-Halflife... and The Specialists (i consider this action-* too because it has very similar setups) and thus i'm not a n00b in this play. Action-Quake still seems to me to have the best balance between luck/ability, action-halflife has too much luck (especially good aim weapons like sniper-rifle have been blocked lowering ability and pushing luck)... TS is better off but especially in slowmo you notice sometimes an 'unpreciseness' which is laughable (gun aiming at guys head in crosshair on around 2m distance, shot goes 1m left pass his head... lovely to watch in slowmo... >_<).

it's just this. gear it more towards AQ where ability counts as much as luck and it's gonna be great.

So very true. Luck has nothing to do with it. It's how you play. If you take time to learn the weapons in ahl you'll get HS all the time.

don't make me laugh. and don't come with "you can't aim".

i always do the same on games if they are new or they upgrade, and that's what i call shooting-range.

for this i take a map and create a server, single player. then i take my spray logo and spray a target on a white wall. then i place myself at different distances, taking different guns, different positions (stand, duck, prone) and firemodes and do test shots on the target. then i check the diameter of the impact holes to see how much the gun sprays, if it shoots where you aim.

did this also with AHL. your 'garanteed HS' is nothing but luck. it's horrible how the weapons spray. even the most precise ones spray worse than a real life bad gun. there exist situations where it works like Magnum, Prone, Laserpointer, Single Shot. such combinations produce diameters that will most probably give a headshot but if you only do this you are nothing but a lame camper that's not fun playin with. AHL is about Action which means you move, you don't camp.

OK, well I talked to the akimbo team whose done the other 'Action' titles and they said they dont want me to use the term 'Action' in the title but they aren't making any competitor to it. They are sticking to making Action Unreal Tournament.

Anyhow, apparently Doom 3 can't handle more than 8 players in multiplayer?? Is this true, or is that just the default setting? Why would it handle so few compared to Quake 3? And has anyone tried with more players?

you meant 4 players, and there's already a hack that ups the limit to 64.

doom3 just was never intended to be a smashing multiplayer game, so theyve left the it basic
