A pet hate... Thread

People always call America the land of the free, but I've never understood why. Anyone care to enlighten me?

(This is not anti-American in any way)

Probably because that was the idea behind America once they got their independence..?

sounds about right, they became independant after getting the british to leave and were fighting for their freedom so the brits are gone they become free thus land of the free

The same goes for Home of the Brave.

The guy who wrote the national anthem got it right when he made 'free' on such a high note that no-one could reach it.

its called home of the free for the same reason a bride wears white, its just been passed down so much.

free, freedom of religion. there are still countries that force you to worship their deity.

freedom of speech, while not literally meant, americans have a little more freedom than the rest of the world, we can say just about anything but bomb and no one would care.

Personally I'm sick of America. I love what America stands for, and the freedom. But seriously...... We've become a stuck-up ignorant asshole of a country.
We have more power and money than anyone else in the world, yet we don't do anything to help the poor countries who really need the help. Instead we just go in and invade somewhere that we have no buisness being.

Not to mention, look at Bill Gates. A lot of people might hate/jealous of him, but he gives hundreds of millions of dollars to charities every year. He's the world's biggest philanthropist

And you shouldn't call us that. It's not our fault. It's the people that run our country Sure, there are things we take for granted, but there are plenty of giving people here, too.

Wasn't talking about the people of America, more just the government. And yes I'm aware that Bill Gates gives money to charity. But that doesn't show anything about the actualy country. Just about him.

Oh yeah and to answer the initial question.... America is free... if we make fun of a political situation in a comic we don't get improsined and beaten.... if we protest the national guard dosen't mow us down.... really the only problem I have with America is that we are getting too "soft" and by that I mean... well here is an example. If you kill someone and get the death penalty, in most states it will be lethal injection. Before they give you the shot they try to deaden it... Yeah America is free but where did the justice go? I say if you commit homicide and you are caught. You die the same death as your victim.
