Maxis Software is an American company that was founded as a video game developer in 1987 and bought out by Electronic Arts (EA), then finally shutdown by EA in March 2013 (giving no reasons why). Maxis' second software title was the seminal SimCity, a city simulation and planning game. Maxis is also the creator of the best-selling computer game of all time, The Sims and its sequel The Sims 2. These three titles and Spore, are the brand's most popular and successful lines.

The lead dev behind Maxis, tells the of the experience of 'working' with EA.

They closed it down due to SimCity, 'always online' functionality was forced into it due to internal policy,
" EA's greenlight gating process – and the marketing resources engaged to promote it – mean that it's very difficult for the studio to make structural changes to the game once the features have already been announced", Meaning to fight release dates, or feature changes is extremely difficult, as is any demands EA makes of the developer. Its always like this, things seem fine in the first year or so, and then EA does what it does.

For Mythic Entertainment, it was forced to make Dungeon Keeper mobile and stand by the EA decisions for it. Before that it was Danger Close Ganes AKA Dreamworks Interactive LLC, where EA to satisfy its lust for CoD the dev got saddled with 2 Medal of Honour remakes and as usual it was strained to force them out the door.

Then back in history we have Bullfrog, Pandemic, Phenomic, Black Box Games, Playfish, NuFX, Westwood & Origin. All bought and subsequently shutdown when they followed EA's strict rules. With many failed attempts at EA to buyout various other companies, lets hope companies resist to the very end.

Bioware has managed to work under EA, and Visceral also at the moment. But I would encourage Visceral to get out as soon as possible. Dead Space 3 was almost ruined by the DLC and microtransaction that split the game into pieces, and Battlefield: Hardline is not being received to well at the moment.
