'Good morning to all (mappers, coders, modelers, fans and halflife halflife2, and all gamers)! Here is my first mod for halflife2! Who can say what whats enough for modding, you can always say it takes more experience, but I think that for 2 months studying a map editor is not so bad.

A little about the story you certainly are Gordon Freeman, you are not known to which plant in the laboratory that is on level1 and suddenly you are told that there was there was a accident on level 2, and you ask for help, (in fact level 4 is a sensitive sector guarded by soldiers) took a bad turn...
And then it was gone, you will meet all the godlessness that broke free from the underground laboratories, as a result of a failure of the experiment. Incidentally, in the end you will see that the same guy who came up with it all was responsible, I'm sorry but you can not kill this evil uncle.
The aesthetics is almost all standard models, textures, etc., I added a few songs, because I have a little experience. I just went to work in the editor, and the result of my efforts is this little mod. I think that the next mod to which I had a hand in will be much more interesting, and it is 'Broken Arrow', on which I also work with the team 'Real Project'.
So is this based off the Jhon Carpenter movie?
Doesn't seem to be, as it follows some kind of a completely different story with different soundtrack as well.

This was made at a time when people had no idea how the new source engine worked.
through all the confusion, somehow donald figured this out and made a working rendered mod of half life 2.
It goes in the sourcemods folder right??

You need to download Half-Life 2 Beta, some kind of fixes for it (which can be found at the website at hl2beta.ru,) then layer over the mod itself (on Half-Life 2 Beta) and run it through the console, like with "map 1".
The mod appears to be Russian, though with English words. I guess "Donald" is someone Russian, actually, the download is also hosted at hl2beta ru website so also should be clear as well, I think.
Well, the folder is called "The Thing" but I already place it in the source mods folder and it didn't even appear on my steam list... So I must be ding something wrong I guess.
Yes because this isn't the mod, it's like a mappack for Half-Life 2 Beta released at its early days. There used to be a short period of time when "HL2world.com" existed, and community there produced content for Half-Life 2 Beta through 2003 on the leaked Half-Life 2 - like Add-ons with maps and stuff. Most of this is on Hl2 beta ru now.
Update: OK, yes, open "The Thing" in the RAR and extract everything to Half-Life 2 Beta, and then run Half-Life 2 Beta through its "hl2.exe" and in the developer console go "map 1", but to choose "skill" (difficulty) before running go "skill 1-3".
Update 2: Yeah this mappack was released about 2 months prior to the release of Half-Life 2 from Vivendi. But I dunno rather if on HL2World.com.
Update 3: I checked the website via Archive Org (as it is completely different now.) I can only assume the actual content that it produced for Half-Life 2 was reposited when the user is online in the website, but I don't know, because I wasn't able to find that content, but it is somewhere now though.

Actual info about "The Thing" is on HL2 Beta RU at Hl2-beta.ru. There you can also download Half-Life 2 Beta, which runs this "mod" (where it is a mappack, but there it was listed as a mod anyway.)
