Some really enjoyable, but pay to win type spoils everything.

This is so true that, if I see anyone disagreeing with this, they must be voted down.

I tumbled into a few nice F2P games but good God, WHY.

Most of free2play titles are made by money vampires like EA so what you can expect from game like that ? bugs ? lag ? terrible gameplay ? aswer: all of them.

Seconded. IMO the term "P2W" shouldn't even exist - sadly, though, it does.

if only EA came up with a free to play were its notP2W but more of like guns of Icarus were its skin only or maybe path of exile were its skins and pets nothing like BF3 or like the new generals 2

'Star Wars: The Old Republic' is one of the most blatant pay-to-win type F2P's I have seen to date! So many features are either reduced in effectiveness or removed entirely!

Totally agree, bro!

It's only pay to win VERY loosely. You can beat the game, it's just there is not much to restrict in the game without it becoming bad, so they take away basic stuff like the ability to change head slots. Subs can go through the game without paying anything other than the standard fee.

The only reason that game was made f2p is to get some living bodies in the game, so their server are not light in population, which was a big problem for a long time. The restrictions there are constrictive when you reach level 20. Also in the verfication section on the website, they ask f2p players for their phone-number which is an invasion of privacy. If you decide to become a preferred player (pay once U$5 for some coins) they will have the extra info.
Preferred players (you never go f2p after that one payment) can have 6 instead of two toons per server, and also have a bigger inventory (30 for f2p (bad!) 80 for preferred)

In comparision with NFSWorld, BioWare's customer support is good, even to f2p players (takes em a few hours to fix a problem you mail about, and they fix first, then mail you that it's done)

You can still have fun in SW:TOR if you are in a guild with many paying players (gives you 10% XP and credit boost)

Infestation is not pay to win at all... all you can do is buy very minor stuff, and to get that stuff you have to be by a safehouse to equip it to your character.. and you won't last long with those items, because you die within 1 hour, if you are not careful enough...

Indeed, if you are looking for a F2P FPS game, get Planetside 2, it's also enjoyable without paying a cent, just...don't go near that thing with the name Point Blank, damn, those are the worse of F2P, it's simply P2W.

i can't get enough of planetside 2, the only good reason to pay is to either speed up the leveling process or to make your character look cool :)

STO is awsome, Im playing it constantly, but getting a higher level ship will require a lot of grind, although they give away unique Higher tier ships now at events, if you work for them, thats how I got my corvette. Still the best ship in game is almost unnobtainable unless you grind 2 years for it or throw in money. Also the game is a bit unbalanced, as cruiser and heavy ships suck, only small ships and some science vessels (namely carriers) will have any place in PvP, and some even say in Endgame PvE (STFs).

Indeed. And it crashes a lot as well, and has a lot of server time-outs.

Some fleets hack in PvP. TFS(total fascist state) and Spanish Inquisition always win every match they join using speed hacks so they have no cool downs and they end up fing us F2pers over cuz they troll about it on utube.

Yes Escorts are being favored in STO, specially with the Romulans, 90% of their ships are escorts and when people complained about the lack of varity of ships they added another escort...lol... but I have been able to play rather competitively with cruisers, especially in STFs tho I do tend to steer clear of PvP.

Yeah it really sucks, I haven't played the game for a few months and to be honest the only think I miss are the people I know in-game not the game itself. STO is an excellent example of a Pay-to-Win game. Since PWE took over their store is no longer just a cosmetic store but a necessary if you want to win in PvP, and even that ain the worse, I won't start on the lotto (aka lock) boxes. lol

I personally don't really enjoy Planetside 2, though it might be because I have to reduce the graphics quality by a large amount to get it to run smoothly. I'm gonna check it out again though and see how far I can push my graphics car without having it explode into flames.

Playing War Thunder without paying a Cent is really enjoable. Yeah its really fun to play against players who reload 4 times faster than you, have their guns firing without jamming and dont black out in hard turns.

NOT!

it takes at least $200 to get the basic crew skills for your 30 crews. it costs about $600 to be actually competitive. and then there is still the GRIND. another $600 out the window!

I'm surprised at the amount of people who chose the 3rd option. A lot of F2P games that are supported by micro-transactions are not only a lot of fun to play, but don't necessarily require you to buy items/in-game currency/etc to do well.

Just my free thought (because 2 cents is micro, right?) :P

Reply Good karma Bad karma+7 votes

Personally, I picked the 3rd one because I've run in to a few too many F2P games where you end up playing, more or less, as if you're stuck on the bottom rung forever unless you pay constantly.

Games where it's more for aesthetic, bonus items/special items, generally extra stuff, etc without making the freeplay worse/without ramping up the difficulty to 11 are great (a good example being TF2), it's just the ones that make the F2P aspect annoying or downright unplayable compared to the paying aspect of their game that sucks.

Part of a good F2P game is making the game fun either way, and people are more likely to dish out some cash on a game they can enjoy without doing so rather than a game that goes "Hey, hi, you died and unless you have $10, we're taking all your items and blasting them in to tiny data bits". For me that's like asking for money in return for not stepping on your grandma's cat. Or your grandma.

I'll never do that with any of the games I make.

90% of the games i play is F2P, the problem is that like 70% of f2p games are actually pay2win or they simply force you to pay for almost everything(SWToR)and the only thing that is actually "free" is the word "free" in the title, which is quite sad...

DotA, LoL, TF2, these are probably some of the best F2P games out there. Developers need to realize that if they want a F2P environment that encourages spending tons of money on gameplay items and mechanics, among other things, they need to take a look at these, taking note of the Multiplayer side of them.

What really makes a good F2P game is the amount of hours players can spend in it, the more hours they spend the more likely they are to put some money into it and buy things for it.

I'll take the example of Plants Vs Zombies 2, which I haven't played yet but I've heard complaint after complaint about.

What I have heard about Plants Vs Zombies 2 is that you can't even finish the Singleplayer campaign without having to pay like 5 dollars. This is highly discouraging, and the complete opposite of what makes a good F2P game.

I for one am a huge fan of Plants Vs Zombies, but I don't think I'll ever even touch PvZ 2 after hearing this, and even if I did I sure as hell wouldn't pay 5 dollars to finish the campaign.

Now we'll compare it to League of Legends, where the majority of things are free, and it's fairly balanced, with a highly competitive Multiplayer scene. Players can spend 50+ hours playing the game easy. After so much time, many players will gladly put about 5 to 10 dollars into the game to purchase new characters, skins, runes, level up, and tons of other things.

Now, I'm not saying Multiplayer makes a good F2P game. What I am saying is that you need to encourage players to put more and more and more hours into the game, in order to convince them to purchase unlockables and other things. That is the best way to make a Consumer happy and to keep coming back for new games, or new items for the games they already play.

Considering how often in a F2P game you can just spend $25 to be comfortable. It's a lot better than the standard $60 for some other games.

For example, War Thunder and MechWarrior Online have good payment models. But then you run into expensive games sometimes, like Star Wars The Old Republic(greedy *****) and Warframe.
