Good modders can change the game without official documentation or backing from original developers and as of now users may have unlocked the editor for many UT3 games that are not officially supported as of yet. Mirrors Edge was first released back in the middle of November 2008, re-released on the PC two months later without any SDK or map editor to be found. Since then there has been a few maps released as DLC, which for some extended the value of the game but removed the entire premise of the game to begin with.
So the crafty tinkerers over on the Mirrors Edge community forums (unearthed by BeyondUnreal) have unlocked the secret to designing your own levels. It seems all you need is a copy of Mirrors Edge and UT3.
Beyond_Unreal wrote: To access the editor its quite easy, simply copy the wxRC and wxRes folders from your UT3\Binaries folder into your Mirror's Edge\Binaries folder and then run "MirrorsEdge.exe editor" like other UE3 based games.
Now since the discovery there have even been a few custom maps released, so this really does work. All that is left to do is create and share your maps.
New levels? Holy crap! I awaits wery long time this! :)
Whell,i put files in correct directory, and nothings happens((( If somebody could add level, please say me how you do that)
Did you follow what do to? You can find all this information on the download, I also believe you need to have UT3 installed and have done the above to access the editor.
"Extract the zip file's content into your My Documents\EA Games\Mirror's Edge\TdGame\Published\CookedPC\Maps\SP00 directory. If some of the folders don't exist, make them yourself. You should now be able to play the level by running the game and selecting the Training Area chapter. The map will override but not overwrite the original training level; remove Tutorial_p.me1 from the directory in My Documents and you'll have the original back again (thanks to Blizzard for pointing this out)."
oh sweet! I've been wanting to make a map for this game due to the art content they have for awhile. I'll have to try this out.
Wondering if this will work with bioshock too. :D
on BU they say not :(
It's a shame, it would be so cool to see some good user made maps for bioshock.
Or Mass Effect. ^^
Yep that would be good
Why don't they release editors for all games?
Because of noobs who will whine and complain when they could easily figure out the answer to their stupid questions if they googled it. As a modder, I know how they must feel.
More shame was tahat the community had to make the editor work.
very cool
This is awesome, now i can make maps instead of wasting cash on DLC, im glad the folks at ON-Mirrors-Edge Forums found this, this is great.
wait one thing though in mirrors edge they used beast to bake the lighting in there scenes with this do we get our hands on beast cause you need to license that out :S
Well its not official, so I would assume no.
ha! thats a two finger salute to EA! well done!
technically could be illegal too. So anyone doing this or distributing maps could get sued, etc. Some games say you can't do stuff like this.
thats when I say "F.U" if they're not going to release it themselves.
Yeah!
Illegal?
No way.
I'm not modifying or decompiling program code.
Same way, new desktop backgrounds for windows are illegal.
Read EULA.
At least... once...
Indeed, the Unreal editor costs developers extra to release with their game. Given that clearly they decided against this when Mirror's Edge was released, they haven't paid the fee, so this will probably get patched out pretty quickly if Mirror's Edge has auto-updates. Doubt there'll be legal action against fans though... That's the fastest way to lose an argument these days!
It is up to epic to patch, this isn't EA's mistake or issue so I doubt they will get involved.
Remember people, this does not utilize the Beast Lighting engine that is featured in Mirror's Edge. You will have to use the Basic Unreal Engine Lighting.
i was doing this a while a go.I'm Faparith on On Mirrors Edge btw.
RvBChandler: I made a tut on how to imitate the basic effect of the Beast lighting engine on this site( Touchofrain.com ). there is also other great tuts on that site and you can submit new one to Bilzzad for upload.
Best of luck to any other Mirrors Edge mappers.
Man thats just awesome
And MoHA, does it work ?
All right! F_ck you EA! You can die in a fire and end up in hell where terrible companies like you belong! Long live modding!
Great news that encourages me to buy this game since I have been waiting for some kind of mod support. So I have a silly question: Do you need UT3 to play the user created maps? I would hope not but it seems this mainly shows how to create maps and doesn't mention if they are easily playable with just mirrors edge. Anyone?
If so then I am getting this game tonight :)
I always encourage people to not support the horrible paid DLC scheme that has been gaining traction in the gaming industry. It seems like most developers just remove features from games and then sell them back to the gamers 1 week after release as payable 'updates'. It is sad to see this idea get attention especially when there are better more innovative updates from passionate modders for free! EA is the king of overpriced and underperforming DLC or expansion packs, just look at Sims *shiver goes down spine*
You need the files from the ut3 binaries folder to copy over to mirrors edge in oder for the editor to load after that you map in the Mirrors Edge editor. But to play maps as far as i know you don't as the files from ut3 are just used to get the editor to load.
If you need help getting it set up just PM me. :)
Good mapping.
mirrors edge is a great game to play, dont get me wrong. But EA is a freakin demon at moddin, i WANT to create lvls, make an sdk you lazy lowlifes i DONT want to spend my summer learning 20 new languages!
