Hello all! Guess what? We've got a 28th Developer Diary for you! Still not quite as soon as we'd like it, but I guess this will work. So, what will they bring this time, you might ask. The answer to that - a teaser on the second minigame by BobaFett in Jedi Knight Galaxies, Slice. We revealed a glimpse of it in diary #26. Initially we were going to make a video in the style of our Pazaak teaser, but we had some technical difficulties getting the raw videos into an editor. So for this time around, we'll all have to settle with screenshots.

Slice is a single-player minigame for slicing computers and bypassing security alarms. This can be done for several reasons: to access quest information, opening a door, shutting down a droid or turret system, etc. Slicing consists of a group of colored boxes. This represents the system's security grid. The size of this grid can vary from 1x1 to 8x8, and does not have to be square. Each node on this grid is initially blue, meaning the node is inactive. Left-clicking on a node activates it, revealing what kind of node it is and activating its effect.

Developer Diary #28 - Slice

The goal of the minigame is to activate all access nodes for each of the up to 5 security levels, without triggering any alarm nodes... To your help your slicing computer provides several programs to help you, the most important being the Probe. Probing the security grid reveals the amount of alarms (in the red field) and total "value" (in the green field) of each row.

Developer Diary #28 - Slice

The value indicated for each row is the sum of all access nodes - which have a value of 1 plus the node's security level - relay and reset nodes. You can mark unrevealed nodes either blue or red by right-clicking them, for example if you suspect the node hides an alarm.

Developer Diary #28 - Slice

Some programs raise the Warning level higher than others, and should be used sparingly. Scanning nodes makes them flash either green (for safe nodes) or red (for alarm nodes) for a few seconds, during which you have to memorize or mark which nodes are safe and not.

Developer Diary #28 - Slice

Once all access nodes have been activated, the highest security level is accessed. Should you choose to stop slicing after unlocking a lower level some of the possibilities unlocked become available, and you can go back to continue slicing the grid any time you want. Mind that it might have been reset once you get back though...

Developer Diary #28 - Slice

Should you fail to avoid the alarm nodes though... Then you'll have to do things the hard way.

Developer Diary #28 - Slice

As you already might have guessed, the GUI is still very basic Work In Progress (as are some parts of the concept itself... Remember that what you see from this mod is always subject of change). However, notice the new cursor by Jake. Adz is working on a beautiful, new interface for the minigame. Here's how it might come to look like as it gets closer to being finished.

Developer Diary #28 - Slice

With that being said, that's all we'll bring you for this time. I promise that we'll have something hot cooking up for you (pun intended) in the Effects area though, so stay tuned on ModDB and the site!

Go play SWG a little and then come back and comment. JKG is based in many SWG systems and KOTOR features.

I don't know why, but the slicing minigame screams "minesweeper clone" to me. However, the methods for detecting the 'alarm' nodes will certainly be rather useful! Nice job on the minigame overall!

Lol... this will support like what... 16 players? Not really an MMO.

64 players, it's considered an LMO, not an MMO.

Fair enough, just seemed a little similar from the description. Not that there's anything wrong either way.

Plus, minesweeper is about finding the mines like the alarm nodes, slice is about unlocking security nodes and avoiding alarm nodes :P
