I tough you said there would not be ISD1, only ISD2?

We had to include the ISD1 because it was the flagship of admiral Pallaeon during the Vong War.

There were also still thousands of them around I dont think every one was upgraded to Imp Deuce standards

We will be examining specific ship abilities later, but to make the ISD2 appear as a stronger ship, we will be trying to include a hardpoint for the ISD1 targeting array located on top of the bridge, which if destroyed, will weaken the firing accuracy of the ISD1's weapons.

The removal of this targeting array on the ISD2 will make the ISD2 a stronger combatant.

So in comparison, ISD2 was stronger at offense, ISD1 was better for defense.

Okey, so it is like comparing AK-47 to AK-74, they are different and neither is simply better.

This idea is quite possibly applicable to more than just these two ship classes?

and you'd think that the Empire would have upgraded most of its ISD-1's to ISD-2's by this point

to me, it seems that the greater amount of firepower on an ISD-2 would seem more advantageous to the Remnant than more accurate targeting data on an ISD-1, as sensor data can have supplementary sources like TIE Vanguards or data-links with other ships (see X-wing novels for a better understanding of what i mean)

The weapons targeting was relocated to an internal system protected inside the ship. So, the removal of the external targeting array was just a relocation, thereby being an upgrade of the ship and correcting a weakness.

all the more reason for refits

the refit might have been too problematic or costly for Remnant... remember, they are no longer galaxy-spanning Empire, but much smaller state, with exponentially lower resources... most of their fleet are leftovers of the time when they were mayor power...

think of them as Russia just after the fall of Soviet Union... they were basically torn to pieces, their economy in a major financial crisis...

How large are fleets going to be? I want to know so I can figure out how many of the awesome ships I can have at once.

Looks cool! I always preferred the look of the turrets on the ISD-1 to the barbettes on the ISD-2. Also the studio model of the ISD-1 had more heavy turrets so it looked better armed. Your versions definitely look better because there are a lot more turrets so it is easier to see that the ISD-2 has more firepower.

I've accepted Fractalsponge's notes as my head canon in regards to firepower where the ISD-1 turrets have more overall firepower than the octuples on the ISD-2, but the octuples can fire a lot faster so they would do more damage over time and would be more effective at a barrage and hosing down faster corvettes/frigates. It might be cool to see a laser barrage ability so a ship like an ISD-2 could destroy a horde of smaller craft.

I love the model, and I think the explanation between the ISD and ISDII is quite plausible. If we think about it, ISDs were kept in service well after the ISDIIs were introduced - there must be a reason why the Empire didn't just retrofit its older ships into the more modern ISDII standard. IIRC most of the Chimera Task Force was also made of ISDs, except for the Chimera itself.

So a fleet composition of ISDIIs escorted by more ISDs for point-defense protection while the harder hitting Deuces do the tougher work makes a lot of sense.

And the origin of the PD systems are explained as well, since the first ISDs were designed during the Clone Wars, where the enemy side had a vastly superior number of cheap droid fighters and bombers, so a capital ship without sufficient fighter cover/PSD would have been extremely vulnerable.

Description

Imperial 1 - Class Star Destroyer

Predecessor to the ISD2, the ISD1 was a strong battleship excelling at close to mid range combat. Unlike the IDS2, the ISD1 contained no long range weapons. The ISD1 featured fewer weapon emplacements but still found a valuable role in fleet tactics due to its various point defense systems (PDS) and additional heavy ion cannons.

Notable differences between the 2 classes:

the 4 octuple heavy long range turbo lasers turrets of the ISD2 have been replaced with 6 heavy quad turbolaser turrets and 2 heavy quad ion cannon turrets (updated from the civil wars's dual heavy ion connons)

removal of fast tracking dual medium turbolaser turrets

only 3 heavy dual turbo lasers mounted on the dorsal surface as opposed to the ISD2's 4

6 PDS systems located 2 on flanks, 2 on sides of main super structure and 2 on vental side behind reactor bulb

In comparison, the ISD1 served better as close range capital ship, providing excellent ion and PDS coverage for smaller ships, while the ISD2 proved to be a more aggressive assault ship.
