Installation Guide

REQUIRES A COPY OF X-COM: UFO DEFENSE (1994); available on Steam and GOG
Provided file is Windows installation. To play on other platforms (Linux, Android, Mac, iOS), you need to download a version of OXCE engine for your platform from here:
Openxcom.org

Warning: while OXCE supports Mac, XPZ does not due to using .gif files. This is on purpose (On both sides, Mac deprecated .gif format support). Mac users are advised to either find a way to convert them to .png, or, better, get rid of their thrash hardware.

- Run Windows in Administrator mode
- Unpack the mod. It will create a complete Openxcom_XPiratez folder with all the files that you need.
- Copy files from your original "UFO: Enemy Unknown"/"X-Com: UFO Defense" folder to the "OpenXcom_XPiratez/UFO" folder.
- Run by OpenXcomEx.Exe

for further info, take a look into readme files in the release package.

Greetings, is it advised to start a new game every time I update x-piratez to a newer version, to avoid conflicts?

I started to play in version N4.0.2 and played quite a lot but in version N5.2.0 the starting base got changed. When I loaded my N4.0.2 save in N5.2.0 the starting and my other bases were unaffected.

Sorry for my silly/noob question. :)

well technically yes and no, yes because N4.x.x has some mechanics it was removed or nerfed on later versions and it could cause some crashes or soft locking you on the research queue, in the other side, you don't need it start a new campaign if your campaign is on the first year, ok?

Hi, is there a way to disable infamy defeat? Like if you get below -500 twice in a row you still able to play and don't have to walk the plank?

Thanks in advance!

Go into the ruleset file in the XpirateZ directory, open it in notepad, scroll to the bottom to find the game options. Somewhere in there is the part that defines what score results in defeat for each difficulty level. Find the one you’re using, and add like two zeroes to the end of the number.

This mod is not noob friendly. Unless you do exactly what developers want you to do, reading wikipedia is mandatory, doing specific research path, strict gameplay loop with no choice on how you play, knowing things you wouldn't have known ahead of the time (Not selling certain items else you're screwed), then you will have a bad time.
Developers advertise 400 hours of gameplay, but no one mentioned how many of those hours you will be having fun, if at all. This all seam like a giant hamster wheel with massive grind. Maybe if game was trimmed down a lot, to let's say 40 hours, you would have a much better experience.
If I had to recommend this game, I would recommend you to save your 400 hours on other things and just avoid this. This mod requires you to read an essay and memorize it before you can even attempt to play this, even FTL on hard wasn't so cruel to me. I know that this mod is free, and that is good, since no one would pay for this experience. Good music, good atmosphere, but requirements to know things before attempting to play this mod ruins the experience, better avoid it.

P.S Reading wikipedia and doing exactly what developers want you to do is not mark of intelligence. How can you expect a person to play the game when they don't even know what games rules are or how it supposed to be played. Also Dota 2 is a live chess game, where you do need to use your brain to play.

You couldn't be more wrong on the "game forces you to read wiki" and "game forces you to play a certain way" arguments.
Piratez is one of the least challenging games there is in the "tactical simulation" genre. Some specific missions and cases may end up very challenging and you will have losses and setbacks, but on the whole it's extremely hard to lose the game entirely, unless you specifically refuse to do anything at all.
Of course, there are exceptions, like the hardest difficulty (which is made specifically for people seeking challenge), or the recent (M) versions where enemy activity ended up being overtuned.

As for the information, the in-game encyclopedia contains literally everything you need to know about the game. Sure, it starts pretty empty, but you'll fill it up. And no, knowing all those things that you're going to unlock *in advance* is not required.

this review made my day, it cracked me up XD , "Also Dota 2 is a live chess game, where you do need to use your brain to play." got me grinning but the best part was the specific research path one. just as a example, do you want to follow the higher powers? , chose one of 4 paths that enables 4 different playstyle focuses which gives you different units, vehicles, and research focuses from magic power to hypnotic strippers and power armor. Do you want to allow male troops? Lesbian superiority movement? do you wanna be a mutant communist rebellion (most powerful building in my opinion) Yes, reading the in game database is a MUST, the game tells you so deliberately in the beginning, it literally says READ OR DIE!!!! How the hell are you gonna lead a rebellion against alien overlords on a planet that was conquered hundred of years ago if you don't bother reading intelligence reports? heck, even if you are behind in research, reading things can give you an edge, like the AP transfer from the runt outfit, I sneaked up once on a nazi tank with a fusion torch and refilled the ap with the runt suit ability since you need like 90% ap to use it, and the thing absolutely MELTED the tank, when nothing else I had could even scratch it. yes the game is insanely complex but it also allows for amazing emerging gameplay. If you don't like that maybe just go play dota 2 and use upgrade path guides for the current meta, unless that is too much "specific pathy" for you. XD

Game is in constant developement and bad versions happen, lately it's the infamous ninjas on M-versions which have been sufficiently nerfed only by N1. Combined with bad RNG of a run (moreso when selecting high difficulty without experience) it could combine into a frustrating run. As for "do exactly what developers want", it's baffling because I have no slightest idea what the player is intended to do and in what order, the developement goals are 180 degrees opposite. Making mistakes is also part of the game, this is why the original was called "enemy UNKNOWN".
