Woah
Uhm, I've just finished DOOM 2 level set on Lunatic. (I'm not that skilled to finish even a single Touhou game on Easy, but, at least I consider UV-maxing DOOM 2 fairly easy for me; so, I chose Lunatic as how UV called in this mod.)
So, a small review... or just a description of my impression. SPOILERS FOLLOW.
The greatest hell for me was Yorihime in the Catacombs. The strategy like "jump down, mess a bit with switches and go up to the red key" doesn't work here: she cut you into pieces at the very moment you open a door to the compartment where she resides. You have to stop time with Private Square and manage in time to get to red key, but... If you leave the pit, she becomes invisible and invincible as she loses sight of you. And, aiming for UV-max run, I considered not an option to skip killing her. So I've collected a big pack of spell cards (trying to not spend them until this very moment), got a bit low on health (you can maximize the effect of your spell cards if you go under certain amount of health) and then activated time stop and landed the whole bunch of these spell cards on her, in the same time, never stopping to pull the trigger of Illusion Laser. I've dealt such a massive amount of damage to her first time (when I grabbed the red key), and then ran over the level to collect remaining spell cards and health, and repeated this–and then she died. Yep, this was spectacular.
Yukari on Refueling Base was not a huge pain I expected of her; you might deal with her just shooting her from the corridor leading to the exit, being well shielded; just dodge her projectiles in time, and you'll be safe. The same moment is when you fight a (typical) bunch of Youmus at Barrels'o'Fun. To conserve your health, it's better hide in the teleport room at central hallway, and shoot from there: it also consumes a lot of time (Yukari was defeated in about a half of an hour, and these Youmus in about fifteen minutes), but at least it's working strategy.
And... Yes, too much of Youmu! How about fight two, no, three, or even four Youmus simultaneously? Each of them has a nonspell and a spell, and looks like somehow overpowered replacement for Hell Knight. She can't be fought in tight places (if so, she slice you in pieces almost immediately–she even can cut through Invincibility Sphere shield, just like Koishi in Untitled's mod was able to kill you even on IDDQD), so, almost each time you encounter a bunch of Youmus, it's better to find an open place quickly so you can get rid of each of them.
At the Monster Condo I started to feel like, you know, Youmu is not a specific person in Gensokyo, but a class of youkai, like fairies, or tsukumogami, or vampires, or something like this–so often I stumbled across her, often in groups.
Of course, there were some bugs, like missing and not-pickable items (in Entryway), non-killable Orin's zombie fairies (they immediately resurrect theirselves if killed; in Untilted's mod, it is intended for Orin to kill them when you capture her last spell, but here it doesn't work), deaf fairies in teleport source rooms (for example, in MAP13, Downtown, they don't teleport into the central room of the building with curved staircase, as pinkies do in normal DOOM 2), and strange limits of spell cards holding amount: most of them have 1, only Master Spark and Fantasy Seal have 2 slots in inventory. It looks ridiculous if we remember that they actually aren't a heavy weaponry but pieces of paper filled up with magical power; it looks twice ridiculous when you see a pile of "Evil-sealing circle" cards in some secret area (as in "Wolfenstein" and "The Spirit World" levels) and you have to re-visit this area each time to re-supply this spell card after use.
Also add lack of "polishing" here. For example: mod does not modify story (intermission screens are the same as in original, despite of the fact there are no demons, there are Touhou girls, except secret levels); some bosses from Dusted's version die with flame effect, but those grabbed from Untitled's version die with explosion of white puffs; some secrets (on Bloodfalls) are empty due to item replacement; power items become useless after MAP02 or MAP03, where you get a full power (a score system like in my Advance Pack might be useful in this case, but there's none); "enemy parade" after Icon of Sin, does not show any Touhou enemies, only normal DOOM monsters; sometimes enemy replacement screws balance (for example: Cyberdemon of Refueling Base is now powerful Yukari, but the same Cyberdemon on The Living End is only Sakuya; so first one is way more harder than last one, but it is supposed to be at least comparable. I suggest enemy replacement to be more dependent on difficulty level.)
So, if I may rate Dusted's Touhou Doom 9/10, Dusted's Touhou Doom Boss Rush 7/10, Untitled's Touhou Doom 10/10, then this one might get something like 5/10. It was fun and interesting, but there is a great amount of things to be improved.
The last version of this mod hard to launch with weapon mods due to spell cards system and new weapons. Can I add my "Monsters only" version?
I need New music!!
