Description

The South Vietnamese Invasion of Laos in 1971, a singleplayer skirmish scenario in The Nam : Vietnam Combat Operations, your freely downloadable Vietnam War RTS Game.

As a test of 'Vietnamization' - South Vietnam's ability to fight Communism with minimal American support - its forces launched a massive attack to destroy North Vietnamese base areas in Laos in the summer of 1971.

About 20,000 of South Vietnam's best troops including Paratroopers, Rangers and Marines walked straight in . . . to a North Vietnamese trap.

Backed by tanks and heavy artillery, 40,000 North Vietnamese soon started hammering at the South Vietnamese columns and firebases.

With the invasion bogged down, South Vietnamese President Thieu decided to quickly airlift two battalions to quickly occupy the town of Tchepone, the symbolic goal of the invasion, which in reality had been largely abandoned by the North Vietnamese. After briefly taking Tchepone, Thieu declared victory and South Vietnamese forces started retreating.

In the end, only half of the 17,000 or so ARVN troops made it back to South Vietnam. Over 70% of the invasion force's tanks, trucks and guns were left behind. In just over a month, North Vietnam had mauled the very best of South Vietnam's units.

Buoyed by their success, the North Vietnamese turned the tables and began preparing for a direct invasion of South Vietnam itself by 1972 . . . but that's another story.
