Description

The Republic lasted from 1160 to 1805. After a being occupied, sold and pawned by several different Italian powers, the city was nominally liberated by Emperor Charles IV in the late 1360s. Along with Venice and Genoa, Lucca was the only Italian city state, who was able to sustain a "democratic" government and its independence throughout the centuries.
